Satellites Expose Risks of Forced Labor in Global Fishing
Fishing vessels with crews of forced laborers behave in systematically different ways to the rest of the global fleet, according to a study purporting to be the first to remotely identify vessels potentially engaged in modern slavery.Using satellite data, machine learning and on-the-ground expertise from human rights practitioners, U.S. researchers found up to 26% of about 16,000 industrial fishing vessels analyzed were at high risk of using forced labor.As many as 100,000 people are estimated to work on these high-risk vessels, many of whom are potential victims of forced labor.
London Thamesport Eyes Short-Sea Container Hub Status

Australia’s New Patrol Boat Named Cape Fourcroy
The Australian Navy’s ninth Cape-class patrol boat was officially named during a ceremony held at the HMAS Stirling naval base in Western Australia. Designed and constructed by Austal, the vessel is the first of two Cape-class patrol boats to be delivered to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) under a A$63 million contract, named ADV Cape Fourcroy after the western most tip of Bathurst Island in the Northern Territory. Campaign to Cut Haulage Miles
Peel Ports announced that it has secured 50 advocates for its Cargo200 initiative and is urging other shippers in the North-west to add their weight to the campaign. Launched in May, Peel Ports called for importers and exporters whose goods began or ended their journey in the north of the UK to switch current delivery of ocean freight from south-east ports to the centrally-located Port of Liverpool. The initiative aims to cut freight mileage by 200 million miles over the next five years. In addition to achieving significant carbon reduction, the company also estimates that the move could save shippers up to £400 per container in transportation costs by delivering to the heartland of the UK.
