Maersk Develops Ship Fuel from Alcohol

Danish shipping conglomerate A.P. Moller - Maersk has joined forces with Wallenius Wilhelmsen, BMW Group, H&M Group, Levi Strauss and Marks & Spencer to explore LEO, a blend of lignin and ethanol, as a potential future sustainable shipping fuel.The LEO Coalition, which also includes Copenhagen University, will consider the environmental and commercial viability of LEO fuel for shipping. Shipping accounts for 2-3% of global CO2 emissions, a proportion that is set to increase as global trade continues to grow at a sluggish but steady pace. As such, this industry has an urgent need to reduce its environmental impact.The marine sector has very different fuel requirements than automotive or aviation.

The Quest to Develop IMO 2020 'bio' Fuels

Top shipping, retail and transport companies are looking to develop an alternative marine fuel which aims to reduce carbon emissions from ships, in another step to push the sector to go green.International shipping accounts for 2.2% of global carbon dioxide emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), more than aviation's 2% share.The IMO, a United Nations agency, has said it aims to halve greenhouse gas emissions from 2008 levels by 2050.Investor and activist pressure is prompting companies to look to speed up reducing the industry's carbon footprint.Denmark's A.P.

At a presentation this morning at the United Nations in New York, Remi Eriksen, CEO, DNV GL led a presentation on “The Future of Spaceship Earth,” a global forecast on the outlook for the world to 2050. The skinny: The world needs to move further, faster on multiple fronts to ensure the sustainable future of the planet. Calling for “extraordinary action” to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) as presented in 2015, Remi Eriksen, CEO, DNV GL introduced “The Future of Spaceship Earth,” a global forecast on the outlook for the world to 2050, at the UN in New York this morning.

DP World to Build Third London Gateway Container Berth

DP World London Gateway plans to move forward with a third berth at the UK’s new deep-sea hub port, which will increase deep-sea access for ships carrying UK imports and exports. Berth Three will enable the use of an additional 400 meters of quay length with a dredged depth of 17 meters alongside, to handle the largest containerships. New birth will become operational in late 2016. It has also developed technology to ensure the port remains open in bad weather. The location of the DP World London Gateway Port, which has 16 million consumers within 50 miles, enables imports to enter the UK closer to where the goods will be consumed. Board Game Seeks to Transform Supply Chain Learning

Three years after its inception, today sees the official launch of an innovative new board game designed to teach young people of all ages about the importance of today’s supply chain in global commerce. The game - Business on the Move - aims to inspire, excite and educate young people from the age of 9 to 19 and beyond. London Gateway Will Add Value to Supply Chain

Sri Lanka’s Dockyard Says Only Talks no Shipyards

Colombo Dockyard Ltd. (CDL) said it was in the preliminary stage of talks with Croatian shipbuilders on possible collaboration but says there is no joint venture plan for a yard in Hambantota. It said in a statement to the Colombo Stock Exchange that the idea of possible collaboration in shipbuilding between Croatia and Sri Lanka was mooted by the Sri Lanka mission in Vienna. Last Thursday, minister for enterprise development and investment promotion, Sarath Amunugama, said there had been talks between Sri Lanka and Croatia on setting up ship-building facilities in Hambantota and talks have started with Colombo Dockyard. His remarks were made at the opening of a supply chain hub for the supermarket chain Marks & Spencer at Global Park in Seeduwa.
