Early-season Gulf of Mexico Storm Trims Some US Oil Production
The first storm to hit oil-producing regions of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico this year sent workers fleeing offshore oil platforms and cut some production.A weather disturbance in the central Gulf of Mexico was expected to become a tropical storm on Friday. It was moving north at about 14 miles per hour (22 kmh) and could bring up to 12-inches of rain to the central U.S. Gulf Coast by Saturday, the National Weather Service said.Equinor ASA on Friday said it had removed staff and shut production at its Titan platform, which is about 65 miles (105 km) off the coast of Louisiana.
Two Injured in Pipeline Blaze off Louisiana
A natural gas pipeline has caught fire approximately 25 miles south of Marsh Island, La., Wednesday, injuring two vessel crew members working on the pipeline, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guard watchstanders in New Orleans were notified at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday that a natural gas pipeline had ruptured and was ablaze. Sector New Orleans directed the launch of a HC-144 Ocean Sentry fixed-wing aircraft crew from Aviation Training Center Mobile to monitor the situation. The dive operation vessel Ms. Kerci was working on the pipeline at the time of the rupture. Two crew members aboard the vessel were injured and are being escorted to Houma, La. The pipeline is reported to be extinguished, the Coast Guard said. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
McMoRan Completes Test in Gulf
McMoRan Exploration Co. has completed a successful production test at its Flatrock discovery located in the South Marsh Island section of the Gulf of Mexico. According to the company, the production test found a gross flow rate of about 71 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. Production is expected to begin at the well by the end of the year.
Coast Guard Rescues Distressed Boaters
Coast Guard crews from Texas and Florida rescued three people from their sinking fishing boat Tuesday 30 miles southwest of Marsh Island, La. Eighth District Command Center about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. report from the crew of the fishing vessel Capt. Jenson that the fishing vessel Marie Anna was taking on water. Shortly thereafter, Capt. Jenson's crew observed three red flares in the vicinity of the distressed boat crew. An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter rescue crew arrived on scene about 7:30 a.m. and lowered dewatering pumps to Marie Anna's crew. Seahawk delivered another pump about 10:30 a.m. the Marie Anna. Calcasieu, La., southwest of Lake Charles. There were no injuries reported. The Marie Anna is presently anchored and marked with two strobe lights on its bow and stern.
Coast Guard Investigates Spill
Coast Guard pollution investigators are en route to a reported oil well line rupture in the Atchalaya Basin, north of Marsh Island. Hilcorp, a Houston company that owns the line, reported the spill at 9:30 a.m. The spill is estimated to be 100 barrels, or 4,200 gallons; the sheen is reported to be 500 yards by 300 yards. Oil Mop, an Oil Spill Response Organization, is on scene cleaning the oil, which is contained in the surrounding marsh.
GOM Well Fire Addressed
Callon Petroleum Co. reported that all equipment and manpower were in place to bring the fire on its South Marsh Island Block 261 well in the Gulf of Mexico under control. Sunday afternoon Callon experienced a natural gas blowout while drilling the No. 2 test well at Block 261, located about 70 miles south of Lafayette, La. At the time of the incident all personnel were safely evacuated from R & B Falcon Corp. R & B Falcon/Cliffs Drilling Rig No. 153, which was drilling the well. Adverse weather prevented re-boarding of the drilling rig until Wednesday.
