MMLP Purchases Marine Equipment From FMT

Martin Midstream Partners L.P. (Nasdaq:MMLP) ("MMLP" or the "Partnership") and Florida Marine Transporters, Inc. ("FMT") has announced that MMLP has purchased from FMT affiliates six liquefied petroleum gas ("LPG") pressure barges and two commercial push boats for approximately $50.8 million. The newly acquired LPG barges enhance MMLP's natural gas liquids ("NGL") handling capabilities. The Partnership intends to use these assets to capitalize on logistical opportunities associated with NGLs on the Gulf Coast. Incremental NGL production volume from the Eagle Ford Shale is one of the primary drivers of the increasing demand for these types of assets. MMLP intends to drive margin by capitalizing on logistical opportunities in excess of the standard marine transportation services revenue.

The Navy’s ship for future sea warfare has become so problematic a congressional subcommittee has called a public hearing to get immediate answers. The Seapower and Expeditionary Forces Subcommittee will hear from those responsible for the Littoral Combat Ship program. In recent weeks, the program to build a fast, flexible and lightly manned warship has been beset with issues. Its advertised price of $220 million per hull rose dramatically to estimates toward $400 million a piece. The Navy wants 55 of the frigate-sized, shallow draft ships, making it a cornerstone of the future fleet. It’s designed to operate close to shore with a ship’s crew of just 40 sailors and a mission crew and air detachment of 35.

Feature: Leaving Home

For many years the fortunes of the Great Lakes-based shipbuilders and naval architects was based solidly on the building level of the owners who were also based on the 94,000 sq. mi. of water that makes up the five Great Lakes. That is no longer as true a statement as it once was. While there are many projects in this area designed and build by Great Lakes firms for owners in the area, an impressive number of significant commercial market projects as varied as Staten Island, New York ferries and Gulf of Mexico crew/supply boats were designed and or built on the Great Lakes. The Kennedy Class of double ended auto/passenger ferries is one of the most recognizable images of New York City. Every weeknight millions of people see one during the opening of the David Letterman Show.
