Illegal Fishing: Philippines CG Apprehends 5 Boats

A total of 74 crews including boat captains were apprehended by the joint personnel from Monitoring Control and Surveillance (MCS) 3004 vessel manned by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Bureau of Fishery and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 5, and Coast Guard Station (CGS) Masbate in coordination with Local Government Units onboard five (5) Danish Seine (Hulbot-Hulbot, Buli-Buli) fishing vessels at vicinity Balud, Jintotolo and Zapatos Islands along Sibuyan Sea in Masbate yesterday, May 12. While conducting maritime patrol at the vicinity, personnel from MCS 3004 sighted said hulbot-hulbot vessels while illegally fishing using Danish Seine method on said islands along Sibuyan Sea.

Typhoon Rips Philippines, Mass Evacuation Underway

A powerful typhoon roared into the eastern Philippines on Saturday, bringing lashing rain and strong winds that felled trees, ripped off tin roofs and toppled power lines in areas still bearing the scars of a super typhoon 13 months ago. About 1 million people had already fled to shelters by the time Typhoon Hagupit made landfall, in what a U.N. agency said was one of the world's biggest peacetime evacuations. As the storm barrelled in from the Pacific, power was cut across most of the central island of Samar and nearby Leyte province, including Tacloban City, considered ground zero of the devastating super typhoon Haiyan last year. "The wind is blowing so strongly, it's like it is whirling," Mabel Evardone, an official of the coastal town of Sulat in Eastern Samar, said on local radio.

Coast Guard Searching for Missing Fisherman

Elements of the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Calumpang continues searching for a 17-year old fisherman who was reported missing by his companion in Balud, Calumpang, Masbate last Tuesday, January 7. The fisherman identified as Daryl Suicon, a resident of Barangay Panampangon, Milagros, Masbate, was reportedly fishing with a companion at the vicinity waters off Ubo, Balud when the incident occurred. Upon receiving the report, CGSS Calumpang conducted Search and Rescue (SAR) Operation for Suicon onboard M/Bca Hanz AJ together with some relatives of the victim but yielded negative result. CGSS Aroroy Rescues 62 from Distressed Boat off Masbate

DOTC-PCG: A total of 54 passengers and eight crew members including the boat captain were safe after they were rescued by the personnel of Coast Guard Sub Station (CGSS) Aroroy Deployable Response Group (DRG) when their motor banca Sikaran-3 encountered engine trouble and went dead on water at the shoreline of San Miguel, Monreal Masbate yesterday, September 3 around 7 a.m. Investigation revealed that Sikaran-3 went dead on water while navigating from Pilar, Sorsogon bound for Aroroy Port, Masbate due to defective fresh water pump that supplies engine cooling system to the said distressed motor banca. A certain Charlie Lawson reported the incident it to CGSS Aroroy via cell phone.

21 Killed in Ferry Sinking

The Phillippine Star reported that 21 bodies have been recovered so far after a small outrigger ferry sailing from Masbate sank in rough waters caused by winds spawned by Typhoon Caloy. More than 10,000 passengers were also stranded as air and ferry services were suspended. The Coast Guard said 18 other passengers of the motorboat Mae An had been rescued since May 12, when it capsized off Masbate after ignoring a general warning from authorities stopping all small vessels from sailing as the storm approached.
