Interns in the At-Sea Technical Internship Program work as marine technicians aboard sea-going research vessels that are part of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS), the United States Coast Guard, and the Ocean Exploration Trust. The MATE Center and the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) are accepting applications for the 2014 MATE/UNOLS six-month internship through December 2, 2013. Applicants must be ready to enter the job market in the field of marine technology with academic studies complete or near complete.

Heeding the call to join “An Ocean in Common,” authors flooded the Oceans ‘13 MTS/IEEE San Diego technical program committee with a record number of abstracts in a single day. Special topics include an Ultra-deep track discussing current and prospective robotic technologies, plus a panel of scientists to consider research questions. Oceans2013 Chair Bob Wernli, and Co-Chair Kevin Hardy, developer of the unmanned landers for James Cameron’s DeepSea Challenge Expedition, will be the session conveners. “James’ intention is to be certain the door remains open to other explorers,” Hardy said.

The Marine Technology Society (MTS) announced the results of its recent elections for positions on its Board of Directors. The following Vice Presidents were elected: Jill Zande, Education and Research; Ray Toll, Industry and Technology; Donna Kocak, Publications; and Justin Manley, Government and Public Affairs. Election results were announced at the Society’s Annual Meeting during OCEANS’11 MTS/IEEE Kona in Hawaii. Jill Zande is the Associate Director and ROV Competition Coordinator for the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center. “Each year over 400 schools, middle through university, participate in MATE ROV competitions.

The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center, headquartered at Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, California, is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded partnership of organizations concerned with marine science and technology education. The MATE Center coordinates and facilitates the development of educational programs in marine science and technology involving grades 9-16, with an emphasis on community colleges. In the Monterey Bay region, MATE and Monterey Peninsula College have developed a new Marine Science and Technology Associate Degree and Certificate Program that begins this Fall 1999 semester with courses geared to prepare students for careers in marine science and technology.
