Cal Maritime Installs Massive Ship Propeller Display

On August 26 Cal Maritime received and installed a massive 18-ton, 18-ft wide brass ship’s propeller which for many years was a landmark of San Francisco’s downtown business district. For several decades, the entrance to the San Francisco office building at 100 Spear Street has been graced by an eye-catching display … a highly-polished brass ship propeller. This 18-ton piece of “commercial art” was a natural, as the building was home to many offices of ocean carriers serving the West Coast. With industry consolidation, the number of maritime-related offices in the building dwindled.

Hawaii Opposes California Container Tax

The California state legislature is considering a new tax on shipping containers that would cost an estimated $34m a year to Hawaii shippers, The Pacific Business Journal reported. More than 80 percent of goods consumed in Hawaii are produced elsewhere and shipped to the islands, and 90 percent of those are shipped through the California ports of Oakland and Long Beach on the ships of Matson Navigation Co., Horizon Lines and Pasha Hawaii Transport. California State Senate Bill 974 would impose a $30 fee per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit, the standard measure of maritime shipping capacity) on every cargo container traveling between California and Hawaii. Most cargo containers are at two TEUs so it amounts to a $60 container fee in most cases.

Matson Says its China Service is Profitable

Matson Navigation Co. Inc., the Oakland, Calif.-based maritime shipping subsidiary of Honolulu-based A&B posted 7 percent more third-quarter revenue but 7 percent lower operating profit. That still meant a profit above $34 million, however. The China service, launched early this year, carried more than 10,000 containers, triple Guam traffic and almost a quarter of Hawaii traffic. "The contributions from Matson's China service increased from the prior quarter, and the service is profitable," said Allen Doane, CEO of the parent company. Everything is measured against projections, however, and Doane said even this performance was lower than "planned levels" as favorable container volumes were more than offset by lower rates and higher fuel and intermodal rail costs.

Industry Reflects on Container Ship Success

It was 50 years ago that Malcom McLean, an entrepreneur from North Carolina, loaded a ship with 58 35-foot containers and sailed from Newark, N.J., to Houston. He was the first to design a transportation system around the packaging of cargo in huge metal boxes that could be loaded and unloaded by cranes. Container shipping eventually replaced the traditional "break-bulk" method of handling crates, barrels and bags, and stowing them loose in a ship's hold, a system in use since the days of the Phoenicians. Replacing break-bulk with cargo containers dramatically reduced shipping costs, reinvigorating markets and fueling the world economy. McLean, who died in 2001 at 87, shares the credit with Matson Navigation Co. of San Francisco, a longtime force in Pacific shipping.
