The ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are partnering with shipping company Maersk Line to measure the environmental benefits of a $125 million upgrade for 12 Maersk containerships. The initiative will involve the installation of high-tech equipment to track vessel emissions and energy efficiency over the next three years, enabling more transparency and ultimately reducing the environmental impact of vessels calling at the San Pedro Bay port complex. Radio Holland’s Mission Critical Communications (MCC) department is responsible for the design, supply and commissioning of the communications system for the Nederrijn and Lek weir complex. This complex, consisting of three hydraulic structures, will be subjected to a major renovation. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure (Rijkswaterstaat) awarded the contract for this programme to Siemens in late 2015. Siemens had included the communications system designed by Radio Holland in its tender bid.

Denmark's Maersk Line is fighting to remain the world's no.1 container shipping carrier as a wave of mergers and acquisitions, particularly in Asia, creates new challengers trying to grab a bigger share of a depressed market. Maersk itself hasn't made a major acquisition for more than a decade but says it might be open to "the right opportunity", although doubters believe such deals risk accumulating ships without securing enough customers. A unit of oil and shipping group A.P. Moller-Maersk , the line has a 15 percent share of the overall container market.

Container shipper Maersk Line has signed an agreement of intent with global aluminum producer RUSAL to cooperate within cargo transportation for the long term. Under the agreement, RUSAL and Maersk Line will cooperate with regards to transport of RUSAL’s products, particularly aluminum and alloys. The estimated cargo volume of the agreement may reach 10,000 containers (TEU) per year. The agreement is valid for three years and includes options for further extension. “The signing of this agreement is a confirmation of the mutual intentions to build a long-term strategic partnership between RUSAL and Maersk Line. The aim of the agreement is the joint search for the most optimal logistic solutions aimed at optimizing costs for both parties,” said Vladislav Soloviev, RUSAL CEO.

Rickmers Maritime, which is affiliated to the Hamburg-based Rickmers Group,  slumped to a $129.2 million loss in 2015 from a $16 million profit a year earlier on increased write offs on the value of its ships and depressed container charter rates. The Container ship operator's charter revenue from its fleet of 16 container ships shrank by 17 percent to $108.5 million from $130.3 million last time. The bulk of the full-year loss was in the fourth quarter when the deficit widened to $129.6 million from $16 million last time, due mainly to an impairment charge of $128.4 million. This took the impairment bill for the full year to $148 million against $63 million in 2014.

Maersk Line, a unit of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, has retained its position as the world’s largest container shipping line, according to Alphaliner. It is still the world’s largest ocean carrier by capacity but its closest rivals, Mediterranean Shipping Co. and CMA CGM, posted higher fleet growth rates during 2015. It is safe from its closest rivals with a fleet growth of 4.1 percent in 2015, data from Alphaliner shows. Maersk has cut sharply on Asia-Europe but have moved ships elsewhere. It had a total operated capacity of 3.01m teu across 584 ships at the beginning of the year, compared with nearest rival MSC’s 484 ships for 2.67m teu.

Volvo Penta has launched an updated version of its D16 marine diesel engine, coming 10 years after the launch of its original version. The updated engine arrives at the same time as Europort, held November 3-6, in Rotterdam. The new D16 marine diesel engine is a compact and flexible choice for a complete power package, a multi-engine application, diesel electric or hybrid solution, despite being the largest marine diesel engine in Volvo Penta’s product portfolio, the manufacturer said.

Maersk Line, has appointed GAC to provide husbandry services for its vessels calling at Hong Kong. Maersk Line is part of the Maersk Group, headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. It operates 608 container vessels and has 374 offices in 116 countries. The company employs 7,100 seafarers and 25,500 land-based employees. Under the two-year contract, which commenced on July 1, 2015, GAC will handle more than 1,000 calls by Maersk Line and MCC vessels per year at all ports and terminals in Hong Kong.

As part of strategic efforts to increase cargo business at the Port of San Diego, the port has entered into a conditional agreement with Mitsubishi Cement Corporation (MCC), one of the largest cement companies in California, for potential future operations at Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. The conditional agreement, which was approved by the Board of Port Commissioners on June 11, 2015, will allow the port to conduct a project review under the California Environmental Quality Act in anticipation of MCC's potential operations at the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal on San Diego Bay.

The Port of Long Beach has prepared the final environmental impact report for the Mitsubishi (MCC) Cement Facility Modification Project. The port’s Board of Harbor Commissioners will consider the adequacy of the final EIR at its regular meeting May 11, and whether to approve the proposed project. Mitsubishi Cement is proposing modifications to its existing import cement facility located on Pier F at 1150 Pier F Avenue. The facility receives bulk cement and cement-like materials (including Portland cement, blast furnace slag, pozzolans, and fly ash) via bulk cargo vessels at Berth F208.

McMurdo Group’s Techno-Sciences Inc. says it has been chosen by the Australia Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) to deploy their next-generation satellite-aided search and rescue systems. The MEOSAR (Medium-altitude Earth Orbit Search and Rescue) installations will be the first such systems in Asia Pacific and will significantly reduce the time between a distress beacon activation and the resulting emergency alert notification from hours to minutes, greatly accelerating the rescue coordination effort by SAR personnel. Eyeing strong growth in China-Myanmar trade, State-owned China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) and MCC Transport, a subsidiary of AP Moeller-Maersk Group, plan to launch services direct services from Shanghai to Yangon on January 25. CSCL and MCC Transport will deploy smaller vessels without having to transfer cargo along the way. Market observers say that both container shipping lines are poised to exploit strong trade growth between China and Myanmar. With an estimated journey time of 12 to 14 days, the service will help the traders to avoid cargo transfers in Singapore or Malaysia, thus saving time and offering increased predictability for shipment schedules.

The first direct shipping route between Myanmar and China, IA5 (Intra Asia 5) was launched in Yangon, by Maersk Line and MCC Transport. Sources said that the Tokyo Trader, the first vessel to do direct shipping service has already left Shanghai on January 27 and is expected to arrive in Myanmar port city of Yangon on Februaty 9 at Yangon International Port. It will run with eight vessels (1100 TEU), docking every week at Myanmar International Port. Industry leaders said this new service will cut shipment time to about six days compare to 18 days in the past, saying that even the first resection is positive, and there are prospects of growth in the future.
