Ballast Water Management is Reducing the Flow of Invasive Species into the Great Lakes

Freshwater ecosystems are threatened by a host of environmental stressors from human activities. Ulstein Names Marti as CEO

Norwegian shipbuilder and vessel design group Ulstein announced Tuesday that its CFO Cathrine Kristiseter Marti has been promoted to replace long-serving CEO Gunvor Ulstein, who has decided to step down.Marti will take over as CEO on November 2 after six years as Ulstein Group's CFO.The transition comes amid changes to management and strategy at the group, which includes several companies focused on various marine-related industries but mainly vessel construction and design.Gunvor…

GPS, Ice Profiling Sonar Used in Sea Level Variation Study

ASL Environmental Sciences said that Dr. David Holland of New York University, in collaboraon with Dr. Natalya Gomez at McGill University, is leading an invesgaon of sea level variaons in the Disko Bay region of western Greenland.According to a statement from the company with over 40 years of experience in oceanographic, acoustic, remote sensing and ice research products and scientific consulting services, a shore-based system compares the direct arrival of GPS signals to the signals reflected off the sea surface to obtain sea level.The presence of sea ice and icebergs complicate the measurements. CIGI's New Man to Lead Arctic Governance Project

The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) appoints John Higginbotham as senior fellow. At CIGI, an independent, non-partisan think tank on international governance, Mr. Higginbotham will play a key role in leading CIGI’s global security project on Arctic governance. Mr. Higginbotham is also a senior distinguished fellow at Carleton University, where has he been working on the Arctic, China and the United States as well as a transportation studies initiative drawing on the strengths of Carleton’s Faculties of Business, Public Administration and Engineering.

Bowles Leads St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp.

The Board of the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Terence F. Bowles as President and CEO, effective November 1. Bowles was President and CEO of the Iron Ore Company of Canada from 2001 to 2010. A chemical engineer with an MBA from McGill University, he previously had a long and varied career at Quebec Iron and Titanium, culminating as its President. He replaces Richard Corfe, who is retiring after nearly 28 years with the organization.

Alexander Papachristidis-Bove has been appointed Chairman of the Board and Managing Director of Hellespont Steamship Corp, the Piraeus-based ship management and marine services company, with effect from October 1, 2009.
