U.S. Coast Guard Boards Containership in Connection to California Pipeline Oil Spill

Seaspan Takes Delivery of 11,000 TEU Containership

Seaspan Corporation said it has accepted delivery of the MSC Shuba B, an 11,000 TEU containership that will commence a 17-year fixed-rate bareboat charter with Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC). Upon completion of the bareboat charter period, MSC is obligated to purchase the vessel for a pre-determined amount. The MSC Shuba B, which was constructed at HHIC-PHIL INC., is Seaspan’s first 11,000 TEU SAVER design containership in a series of five ships, all of which are signed to bareboat agreements with MSC. Seaspan also announced that it has entered into fixed-rate time charter contracts with a leading liner for two 10,000 TEU newbuilding containerships currently under construction at Yangzijiang’s shipyards.

Hanjin Talks on Long Beach Sale

Hanjin Shipping Co Ltd is in talks to sell its stake in the Long Beach Terminal in California to Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A.(MSC), reports Reuters. The court overseeing Hanjin's receivership says the company is negotiating with MSC, it's partner in the terminal and which has first right of refusal. Hanjin Shipping owns a 54 percent stake in Total Terminals International LLC, which operates Long Beach Terminal in the U.S. MSC owns the remaining 46 percent. Will Zim Join 2M?

Israeli carrier Zim Integrated Shipping Services (ZIM) might join the 2M Alliance between Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co., Alphaline said quoting industry sources. This news followed the last week's news of South Korea’s Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), currently a member of the G6 Alliance, that it was in negotiations to join the 2M partnership. 2M alliance currently consists of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC). Zim has a 3.3 percent share in the trans-Pacific route, Alphaliner said and that would be good synergy for 2M. Zim is the only major global container ship operator that has not officially joined any of the existing alliances or the new groupings that will begin next year.

Adani Ports Income Up by 15%

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (“APSEZ”), India’s largest port developer and part of Adani Group, today announced the financial results for the quarter and nine months ended December 31, 2015. Consolidated total income including other income increased by 15% to Rs.5,779 crores in 9MFY16 as compared to Rs.5,006 crores in the corresponding period last year and the consolidated EBIDTA excluding other income increased by 22% to Rs.3,421 crores in the current nine months as compared to Rs.2,806 crores in corresponding period last year. Adani, Terminal Investment to Create Transhipment Hub at Mundra

Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd (APSEZL), part of the Adani Group, today said it will expand its existing terminal Adani International Container Terminal Private Limited (AICTPL) at its flagship Mundra port. AICTPL is a 50:50 JV with Terminal Investment Ltd, an arm of Swiss-based Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A, the second largest shipping liner in the world. The expansion is being carried out to create a transhipment hub for the Middle East, South Asia and India. Upon completion, AICTPL will emerge as India’s largest container terminal with a total quay length of 1,460 meters and cargo handling capacity of 3.1 million TEUs. It will be equipped with 15 super post panamax quay cranes, capable of handling 18,000 TEU container vessels at the terminal.

MSC Returns to Iran

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A has resumed vessel operations to Iran, after services were suspended in 2012 in response to trade sanctions. From April 2014, to maintain services to customers, MSC partially resumed operations by utilizing a third party feeder service which allowed cargo to be transshipped in Jebel Ali. On December 31, 2015, MSC’s 9,400 TEU vessel MSC Domitille called at the southern Iran port of Shahid Rajei (Bandar Abbas), marking the beginning of regular calls for MSC and paving the way for resuming business with Iran. MSC Domitille discharged 599 TEUs of cargo, or 300 containers of foodstuffs as well as agricultural commodities.

MSC Tests Iranian Waters

The Geneva-based Swiss company, Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC), which is the world’s second-largest shipping line in terms of container vessel capacity, has returned to Iran more than six years after it docked at an Iranian port the last time. According to Tasnim news agency, the Swiss ship MSC Domitille arrived at the second terminal of largest Iranian port Shahid Rajaee on Thursday. This follows the implementation of a recent nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, which will terminate all anti-Iran sanctions. Ebrahim Eidani, the director-general of Ports and Maritime Organization of Hormozgan province, said the ship was the first one belonging to the Swiss company docking in Iran after six years.

Shipping Lines Keen for Cooperation with Iran

The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines and the country’s leading ports operator, the Tidewater Middle East Maritime Company, have been removed from the US list of companies designated for sanctions and assets freeze, reports Press TV. International shipping lines are already stepping up port calls to Iran as the country’s massive maritime trade sector is emerging from the sanctions. U.S. sanctions barred IRISL fleet of about 170 vessels from sailing in international waters. They also prohibited international shipping companies from calling on Iranian ports. MCS Adds London Stop to Australia Express Service

The MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A Australia Express Service will begin calling at DP World London Gateway Port, the U.K.’s newest deep-sea terminal, following changes to the service. The service will now provide direct calls between DP World London Gateway Port, King Abdullah port in Saudi Arabia, Colombo in Sri Lanka and ports around the Australian coast. It will reportedly be the fastest direct service between Northern Europe and Australia in the market. MAN’s Largest, Most Powerful Engine Leaves Test Bed

Doosan Engine has reported that the initial start of an MAN B&W 11G95ME-C9.5 two-stroke engine took place during October 2015 at its works in Korea, followed subsequently by a successful shop-test. According to MAN Diesel & Turbo, the engine – rated at 103,000 horsepower – is the largest and most powerful engine from its portfolio ever to be designed and built. The engine is the first in a series of six bound for six 19,160-teu containerships ordered by one of the world's largest shipping lines, Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC).
