A U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego helicopter crew rescued a 64-year-old male passenger from a fishing vessel approximately 40 miles off the coast of San Diego, Thursday.Coast Guard Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center watchstanders received a distress call from the fishing vessel Pride, requesting a medical evacuation for a crewmember at approximately 9 a.m. The injured male was experiencing multiple onset abnormalities.Based on the reported condition of the individual…

California Asks Trump to Deploy USNS Mecy to LA 'Immediately'

California’s governor on Thursday asked President Donald Trump to send a U.S. Navy hospital ship to the port of Los Angeles “immediately” as the state braces for an expected surge in the number of coronavirus cases over the next eight weeks.Trump said earlier this week the Navy hospital ships Mercy and Comfort would be pressed into service, one on each coast, as healthcare systems become badly strained during the pandemic.But U.S. defense officials have said the ships were not yet ready to sail on the emergency mission…

USCG Evacuates Man with Leg Injury Near Nixon Beach

A rescue crew from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Florida, medically evacuated a male in the vicinity of Nixon Beach, Florida, Saturday. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami received a report from a crewmember aboard a 53-foot catamaran, Mariah, of a 37-year-old male passenger who required emergency medical services after suffering an injury to his leg after jumping off the boat. A boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach arrived on scene and transported the male to Mercy Hospital in Miami.

Garnett H. Carnahan Passes at 84

Longtime Springfield and Nixa business owner Garnett H. Carnahan passed away Saturday, February 22 at Mercy Hospital as the result of a brain aneurysm. He was 84 and was surrounded by family at his passing. Born in Windsor, Mo. to the late Hugh and Modena Bowman Carnahan, Garnett is survived by his wife of 26 years, Caroline Lee Carnahan, and 12 children: Kathy (Jeff) Munzinger, Kenny, Gerry (Alecia), Cindy (John) Byrd, Bryan, Robin (Denzil) Hood, Chris, Kelly (Dwight) Batiste, David (Kathy), Ben (Andrea), Louann and Hugh.

Professor Alpha Condé, President of Guinea, tours the 'Africa Mercy' hospital ship, docked at the Port of Conakry, the capital of Guinea. Donovan Palmer, Managing Director and International Vice-President of Mercy Ships, the Senior Management Team and over 100 Mercy Ships volunteers were present as a strong demonstration of appreciation and respect to the President and his government for enabling and supporting the Mercy Ships medical mission in Guinea. President Condé expressed his appreciation for how much he had learned about Mercy Ships on his tour.

Protocols have been signed for a Mercy Hospital Ship to dock in Congo-Brazzaville’s western port city of Pointe Noire. Meetings with the Republic of the Congo’s Ministries of Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Congo-Brazzaville’s western port city of Pointe Noire this past week culminated in the signing of agreements to confirm that a Mercy Ship will dock in this Central African nation as its next African port of call. An initial protocol was signed in the nation by HE President Denis Sassou Nguesso during a visit by Mercy Ships President/Founder Don Stephens in May 2012.

TK Foundation Approves Maritime Education/Research Funding

The TK Foundation has announced the approval of eight grants totalling nearly $2 million. The TK Foundation is a strong funding vehicle for maritime programs and youth development. Its maritime grant-making program is proactive, inviting maritime organizations to submit requests for funding in specific areas of interest to the Foundation. In keeping with its focus on supporting non-profit organizations and programs that improve the maritime realm, The TK Foundation has granted eight awards. The World Maritime University (WMU) is a centre of excellence for maritime education and research, operating under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Seagull Donates Training Software to Mercy Ships

Norwegian seafarer training specialist, Seagull, has donated software to Mercy Ships, the operator of the world’s largest non-governmental hospital ship, the Africa Mercy. Mercy Ships provides free health care, community development, health education and agriculture projects, mental health programmes and palliative care. “The donation from Seagull increases the skills of our crew, and the onboard training programmes will allow us to direct even more of our resources to the people of Africa,” said Arvid Solheim, National Director - Mercy Ships Norway.
