MarTID 2020: Maritime Training Budgets Continue to Rise

Training budgets for seafarers continue to rise around the world, and seafarers themselves increasingly are paying the price, according to the MarTID 2020 Training Practices Report.Responses (278) to the 2020 MarTID report, the third in the series, rose 60% versus 2019, and again included insights from seafarers (accounting for 53% of the response), vessel operators (24%) and METIs (23%).The survey for MarTID 2020 was concluding just as COVID-19 was starting to spread rapidly…

Offshore Energy Outlook for 2020

Equinor’s Hywind Tampen project will use floating wind turbines to provide power to the Snorre and Gullfaks oil and gas production facilities. (Image: Equinor)

The “new normal” is a phrase tossed around often in offshore energy circles today as those servicing and operating in the sector grapple with the harsh realities of the prolonged industry downturn. Operators, service companies and equipment suppliers have been forced to adjust to oil selling at prices well below the $100+ per barrel mark seen in years past. As of this writing, Brent oil was hovering around $62 per barrel, and analysts expect prices will remain in this range for some time into the future. On top of this…

NorShipping 2019: A “Koselig” Event

"Koselig" is a Norwegian adjective used to describe situations that give a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation. The NorShipping exhibition and conference, one of the largest in northern Europe, could definitely be described as koselig. Occurring in Oslo, Norway between June 4-7, 2019, the conference featured close to 1,000 exhibitors from around the world. With the prominently featured Blue Economy Hall, terms such as marine sustainability and environmental ocean awareness held the center stage at a number of the events. In true Norwegian fashion, most of the major press announcements were delivered in semi-intimate gathers with copious amounts coffee by maritime CEOs and VPs who enjoyed being called by their first names.

No two oil spill response operations are the same. Each can present new and even tougher challenges for spill responders as they detect, contain and recover spilled oil. Diverse aspects affecting oil spill response operations can be the physical environment, spill monitoring, use of chemical dispersants, and the availability of proper technology for the situation. Some challenges have been met through research and technology development of techniques for dealing with spills. However…

A 2.5-ton capacity SP Radiolink plus load cell measures tension on a line stretching across a lagoon, upon which a dredge travels at a biosolids management facility, part of the City of Eugene Waste Water Dept., in Oregon, U.S. The RLP was added to inventory at the start of the latest six-month biosolids management season in March, where it replaced a dynamometer that was not suited to working in the elements. The load cell is connected to a land-based lateral move system that allows the dredge to move from side to side as well as forwards and backwards to harvest biosolids in the lagoon.

Historic Shipwreck Discovered in Northern GOM

During a recent Gulf of Mexico expedition, NOAA, BOEM and partners discovered an historic wooden-hulled vessel which is believed to have sunk as long as 200 years ago. Scientists on board the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer used underwater robots with lights and high definition cameras to view remnants of the ship laden with anchors, navigational instruments, glass bottles, ceramic plates, cannons, and boxes of muskets. Equipped with telepresence technology, Okeanos Explorer reached audiences around the world who participated in the expedition through live streaming Internet video. As members of the public ashore watched live video from the ocean bottom…

Shipyard Research & Development Projects – NSRP to Grant Awards

The NSRP is a collaboration of American shipyards working together to reduce the cost of building, operating and repairing US Navy ships by developing and applying advanced technology and processes. The projects will be executed through the NSRP Ship Production Panels, a primary program methodology for industry-wide networking, technology transfer and best-practice sharing. The award supports tactical baseline projects that rapidly implement innovative, cost-reducing technologies or processes. The projects awarded align with NSRP’s strategic priorities and major focus areas as outlined in the program’s Strategic Investment Plan.

DNV’s summer students presented the results of seven weeks of intense and targeted work with a concept for year-round drilling and exploration offshore north-east Greenland. More than anything their work unfolded a massive need for new technologies, improved standards and increased arctic research. But that’s not all; the students predict that drilling in the Arctic could be up to four times as expensive as drilling in the North Sea. DNV’s summer project is an annual program organised during the summer months for students in their final year of a master’s degree program.

Interagency Task Force Affirms USCG Missions, Cites RCP as Government-Industry Success

The Interagency Task Force on USCG Roles and Missions has submitted a report to the President reaffirming the importance of the USCG's current mission portfolio and "emphatically and unanimously" supporting recapitalization of the Coast Guard's aging deepwater force capability. Of particular interest to AWO members, the report also affirms the value of government-industry partnership and highlights the AWO Responsible Carrier Program (RCP) as a model of such programs' success. Established by Executive Order in March 1999, the task force was charged with providing "advice and recommendations regarding the appropriate roles and missions for the USCG through the year 2020." The task force was asked to give particular attention to the need to modernize the USCG's fleet of deepwater cutters…
