VIKING Norsafe Life-saving Equipment HELLAS has secured orders from Greece’s Ministry of Shipping & Island Policy to deliver 31 patrol boats and three high-speed boats to the Hellenic Coast Guard. The orders, covered in three separate contracts with the VIKING Life-saving Equipment subsidiary, are part of an EU-backed Hellenic Coast Guard procurement program which was initiated four years ago.Two of the contracts cover 31 boats based on VIKING Norsafe’s proven Munin S1200 hull form, with the design adapted to meet client requirements.

Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) said it is working with Laskaridis Shipping and smart tool provider METIS Cyberspace Technology on a pilot project to develop and apply a new BV SMART 3 Class notation covering the use of augmented data in ship operations.Modern ships increasingly use smart systems designed to improve their operational efficiency. As part of its strategy to support maritime digitalization, BV has developed a framework of SMART notations for ships which provide consistent and uniform standards for the ‘smart’ techniques used to monitor and improve fleet performance.

Ballast water equipment maker Erma First expands its portfolio and brings "the world’s smallest" ballast water treatment system to the international market through its acquisition of US firm oneTANK LLC.oneTANK, a subsidiary of Glosten, developed a small scale innovative, low-cost, IMO Revised G8 Code and United States Coast Guard compliant system. Danish company  Viking Life-Saving Equipment has won an order for eleven METIS Rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) from the Greek Navy.The new RIBs will be deployed mainly to support search and rescue operations on delivery over the summer of 2020. Maritime training budgets continue to trend upwards, compared to the year before: more than 52% of vessel operators reported an increase in training budget, while over 62% of METI reported a larger budget for training. Around 60% of operators and 68% of METIs expect further increases in their training budget for the coming year.These are preliminary findings from the second annual global Maritime Training Insights Database (MarTID) survey. The Canadian province of Alberta, the biggest source of U.S. oil imports, announced the members of its climate change policy review panel on Friday, part of its pledge to implement new rules on greenhouse gas reductions. Environment Minister Shannon Phillips said the panel would offer recommendations to the government by early November, ahead of a key United Nations climate change conference in Paris in December, but did not say when new GHG targets are likely to come into effect. The five members of the panel are University of Alberta energy economist Andrew Leach, former Suncor Energy executive Gord Lambert, Enbridge Inc executive Linda Coady, Pembina Institute board member Stephanie Cairns and Angela Adams, a Metis Fort McMurray school district trustee.

The Port of Vancouver USA welcomes the 'Metis Leader' commanded by Capt. Nicanor V. Alcala of the Phillippines on her maiden voyage to the United States, informs Inchcape Shipping Services (ISS). The vessel was built in July of this year and was launched July 23, 2013. The Metis Leader is owned by Cyprus Maritime S.A. of Panama and is one of approximately 100 vessels the NYK Line currently has in service. The vessel is 656 feet in length and has a deadweight capacity of 18,200 metric tons.

1852- Congress passed the Steamboat Act which established the Steamboat Inspection Service under the control of the Treasury Department (10 Stat. L., 1852). The Act provided for the appointment, by the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate, of nine supervising  inspectors. These men, experts in the construction and operation of commercial craft, were paid by the Government. They were to meet once a year for the purpose of consultation and the promulgation of regulations governing the administration of the applicable laws, assigned territory being covered by each of them. Local inspectors, acting under the supervising inspectors, were authorized to issue licenses to engineers and pilots of passenger vessels.

Voller has begun sea trials on its sailing yacht equipped with a 1 kW fuel cell, reports said. The prototype fuel cell generator is being tested on-board Voller's Beneteau Oceanis 411, the Emerald, in preparation for the yacht's official launch at METIS in November this year. Source: Fuel Cell Today
