Jamaica Elected to Council C Category of IMO Council
Jamaica has reestablished its position at the heart of international maritime rule-making following its election to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Council. The nation was elected as a Category C Council member on December 1, and will serve until 2019. The Maritime Authority of Jamaica’s (MAJ) Director General, Rear Admiral Peter Brady previously chaired the former IMO’s Standards of Training and Watchkeeping (STW) sub-committee between 2003 and 2012, now called the Human Resource Training and Watchkeeping Sub Committee.

CMA CGM signs MoU for expansion in Caribbean
The CMA CGM Group is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the operation, equipment and expansion of the Gordon Cay Container Terminal in the Jamaican port of Kingston, for a minimum period of 35 years. The project to develop the terminal will be based on the existing facilities. Signed on 4 August 2011 by Rodolphe Saadé, CMA CGM Executive Officer, and the Chairman of the Port of Kingston, in the presence of Jamaica’s Minister of Transport Michael Henry, the MOU marks the start of a major investment program before the terminal is fully commissioned in 2015. The project to widen the Panama Canal will require a major reorganization of shipping, particularly in the Caribbean and North America region.
Jamaica Opens Bremen Office
Cutting the metaphorical ribbon for the official opening of the JSR’s new office in , Hon. L. Michael Henry, CD, MP and Jamaican Minister of Transport and Works, paid tribute to ’s position as a leader in the shipping world saying its maritime cluster embraces just about every sector of this multi‐faceted and diverse industry. He also used the occasion to outline the Jamaican government’s plans to create the island into a global maritime centre incorporating ship registration, ship finance, shipmanagement, shipbroking, ship and container repair as well as bunkering, surveying and marine insurance.
