Krill Installs VFMMS on FRV Reuben Lasker

Krill Systems Inc., leader in advanced Vessel Fuel Measurement and Monitoring Systems (VFMMS), installated and conducted sea trial on-board the NOAA Ship Reuben Lasker. The NOAA Ship Reuben Lasker is the fifth in a series of Fishery Survey Vessels (FSV) and one of the most technologically advanced fisheries vessels in the world. Funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and built by Marinette Marine Corporation in Wisconsin, the ship’s primary objective is to support fish, marine mammal, and turtle surveys off the U.S. West Coast and in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Reuben Lasker is classed as a Fishery Survey Vessel (FSV). All FSVs are American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Ice Classed "C0".

Krill Wins Multi-boat Contract for Hydrovias

Krill Systems Inc., a compny in Vessel Fuel Measurement and Monitoring Systems (VFMMS), announces that it was awarded a contract to supply and install multi-point VFMMS systems onboard inland waterways push-boats being constructed by Uzmar Shipyard in Izmit, Turkey for Hydrovias do Brazil. The 45.6m LOA push boats, from the drawing board of naval architect Robert Allan Ltd., will be diesel-electric powered with azimuthing drives and propellers in nozzles configured for shallow water operation and will be used for inland logistics in South America.

The project builds on Clydeport’s recent investment in GIS software and was targeted at improving data and information management within the Hydrographic and Dredging Department. Krill Installations on NOAA Vessels Complete

Krill Systems Inc., a provider in advanced Vessel Fuel Measurement and Monitoring Systems (VFMMS), is pleased to announce successful installation and sea trial of two systems on-board the NOAA research vessels Henry B. Bigelow and Pisces. NOAA Ship Henry B. Bigelow and NOAA Ship Pisces represent the first two fittings of a multiple vessel NOAA contract awarded in a competitive bid, on an unrestricted basis, to Krill Systems to implement VFMMS (Vessel Fuel Measuring and Management Systems) within their fleet. Krill Systems, which provides Vessel Fuel Measurement and Monitoring Systems (VFMMS), reports success in the installation and sea trial of Krill VFMMS systems on-board three support vessels operating as part of the Shell Alaska Arctic offshore drilling project. The VFMMS systems were installed in Seattle at the beginning of July, after which the vessels immediately departed for Alaska waters. Michelle Obama Christens ShipConstructor-Designed Vessel

On Friday, July 23, First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama christened the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, a vessel that was detail designed and production engineered by Northrop Grumman using ShipConstructor CAD/CAM software. Stratton is the first Coast Guard patrol cutter to be named after a woman in more than 20 years. The ship is named in honor of Dorothy Constance Stratton, the first female commissioned officer in Coast Guard history. Stratton served as the director of the SPARS, the Women’s Reserve during World War II.

Scheduled for a September 2003 release, the next major revision of the 3-D product modeling software for shipbuilding and offshore platforms from Albacore Research Ltd., ShipConstructor2004, will include a full Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning module (HVAC). HVAC is a fully integrated member of the ShipConstructor suite of Structure, Automatic and Manual Nest, NC Code generation, Outfit, Pipe, Fairing, and Lofting tools. To facilitate automatic report generation, HVAC makes full use of ShipConstructor's SQL Server product database. As with all ShipConstructor modules, HVAC is a full 3-D modeling package; this reduces drafting errors and time-to-production. With ShipConstructor, HVAC ducts are full-featured AutoCAD entities.

65th Anniversary: From 2D CAD to the Integrated Product Model

One of the most important improvements in ship production has been the introduction of CAD/CAM. The initial use of computers for drafting, lofting and automation of steel cutting has been extended from the design office and the mold loft throughout the shipyard and beyond by integrating the Internet, sophisticated database applications and enterprise management software to radically improve the entire shipbuilding process. However, the result of this, the Integrated Ship Product Model, is poised to revolutionize ship management and maintenance throughout its lifecycle. Boats and ships differ from most other objects because they are formed of arbitrary curved surfaces instead of well-defined assemblies of geometric shapes.

Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders are building a highspeed catamaran ferry for San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation district. Designed by International Catamaran Designs (INCAT) of Sydney Australia, this will be Nichols Brothers 27th U.S. built highspeed catamaran. The vessel will be 139 ft. overall with a 34-ft. beam and draft of 9 ft. The individual hulls will have a beam of 9 ft.. A 37-knot speed is predicted with four 16-cylinder Cummins KTA50-M2 main engines delivering 1,600 hp each at 1800 rpm. Each IMO emission certified engine will drive a Hamilton model 571 water jet through a ZF Marine BU 460D marine gear. Electrical service will be provided by a 125 kW generator set powered by a Cummins Marine 6CT8.3DM engine.

Company Profile: Autoship Systems Corp.

Autoship Systems Corporation (ASC) of Vancouver, Canada has been a leader in CADCAM vessel design software for nearly 25 years. Originally conceived for the monohull, ASC software is now used for designing all types of marine vessels – from conventional hull forms to oil rigs. In the early 1980s, PCs were beginning to have respectable computing power at a relatively affordable price. This situation encouraged Grahame Shannon of Vancouver, Canada to develop his idea of designing vessels on the PC-platform. Soon Shannon had many naval architects knocking at his door. His design software, called Autoship, had apparently made the vessel designer’s life a lot easier.
