Workforce Development: Apprenticeship Programs Help Build the Fleet

Over the past 100 years, more than 5,800 men and women have graduated from the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) Apprentice Program.  Upon successful completion of the program, apprentices are promoted to journey workers and attain an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S) Degree in Applied Trades. University of Vermont Orders Hybrid-electric Research Vessel

The University of Vermont has ordered a new research vessel featuring an emissions-reducing electric power and propulsion system.The 64-foot aluminum catamaran, designed by Chartwell Marine and currently under construction at Derecktor Shipyards, will be equipped with a hybrid-electric power and propulsion system supplied and integrated by BAE Systems. Ingalls Shipbuilding to Fund STEM Projects

America’s largest military shipbuilding company Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has awarded $99,592 in grants to 28 STEM-related initiatives from schools and educational organizations in Mississippi and Alabama.According to a press note, this is the program’s 12th year. Ingalls has awarded more than $1 million for science, technology, engineering and mathematics projects during that period.“These projects expose students to innovative concepts, sharpen their critical thinking skills and broaden their understanding of technology-driven professions,” said Edmond Hughes, Ingalls’ vice president of human resources and administration.

The crew aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast (WMEC-623) returned home Friday to Astoria after a 60-day counternarcotic patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.While patrolling international waters off the coast of Mexico and Central America, Steadfast’s law enforcement boarding teams intercepted and stopped eight separate vessels suspected of smuggling illicit drugs. USCG Cutter Seizes $200m in Cocaine

The crew aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast (WMEC-623) returned home Friday to Astoria after a 60-day counternarcotic patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. While patrolling international waters off the coast of Mexico and Central America, Steadfast’s law enforcement boarding teams intercepted and stopped eight separate vessels suspected of smuggling illicit drugs. The eight boardings resulted in the discovery and seizure of approximately 13,123 pounds of cocaine worth more than $200 million wholesale. The 210-foot cutter deployed to the Eastern Pacific Ocean in support of the Joint Interagency Task Force South with the primary mission of detecting and interdicting illegal drug traffickers.

NYK Sponsors Facilities for Project Hope School, China

NYK Line (China) Co., Ltd. has donated 30 bunk beds and some sports supplies to NYK Wangping Middle School, which is located in the rural area of Luoyang in Henan province. On October 21, Yuji Isoda, a corporate officer at NYK and the company’s chief representative for China, visited the school with officers from the Luoyang municipal government and education bureau to attend a ceremony in recognition of the event. The school and the government expressed their sincere gratitude to the NYK Group for its 14 consecutive years of support. Through Project Hope,* the NYK Group sponsored the construction of two schools, NYK Wangping Middle School in 2001 and NYK Xuncun No. 1 Middle School in 2004.

Seaperch Underwater Robotic Championships

This year the SeaPerch Program will celebrate a half decade of national underwater robotic championships. On the last Saturday in May, the fifth National SeaPerch Challenge will be held on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMassD) campus where 150 teams of middle and high school students from across the country will compete on the national stage. The phenomenal growth of the event is evident with a simple look back to the inaugural National Challenge, staged in Philadelphia five years ago attracting 38 teams and 187 students.

SC Ports Report Cargo Volume Growth

February marked the second consecutive month of 18 percent container growth at the SC Ports Authority, bringing fiscal year container volumes totals to 1.23 million twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs. Last month Charleston handled 152,925 TEUs, a significant increase from 129,747 handled during the same month last year. Since the fiscal year began in July, the port's TEU volume is 14.3 percent higher than the same period last fiscal year. As measured in pier containers, SCPA moved 86,258 boxes in February.

ExxonMobil Encouraging Girls into Engineering

ExxonMobil is encouraging girls to consider science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers through the '12th-annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day program' to be held at 14 ExxonMobil and XTO Energy sites nationwide over the next several months. Mississippi Hosts Fourth Annual National SeaPerch Challenge

108 teams of 451 students from 19 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as a team from New Zealand  competed in the Fourth National SeaPerch Challenge

The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS, and the Mississippi Regional SeaPerch Committee in mid-May hosted the Fourth National SeaPerch Challenge on the campus of Southern Miss. It was here that 108 teams of 451 middle and high school students – students from 19 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and for a first time ever, and international team from New Zealand – convened at the University’s Payne Center and Johnson Natatorium for a weekend of competition and fun.

STEM: SeaPerch Underwater Robotic Championships

Excitement continues to build for the Fourth Annual National SeaPerch Challenge, as 2014 will see the largest group of SeaPerch competitors ever to assemble and compete for the title of National Champion. Hosted by the Mississippi Regional SeaPerch Committee, this year’s national competition will be held at the University of Southern Mississippi (Southern Miss) in Hattiesburg, MS, on Saturday May 17, 2014. Huntington Ingalls Industries hosted commencement exercises for the company's Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding. The graduation, held at the Liberty Baptist Church Worship Center in Hampton, celebrated 137 apprentices representing 18 trades and four advanced programs. Danny Hunley, vice president of operations at Newport News and an Apprentice School graduate, served as the keynote speaker. He shared lessons learned during his 40 years of service at the shipyard and reminded the future shipbuilders of the importance of their daily work.

Ingalls Awards Nearly $108,000 in School Grants

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today that its Ingalls Shipbuilding division has awarded nearly $108,000 in grants for 25 different projects from schools and educational organizations in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The grants, which were requested by all of the organizations, will be used for projects associated with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This is the sixth year for Ingalls' STEM program. The company has awarded more than $500,000 for STEM-related projects during that period.

Rolls-Royce Rewards School's Science Teaching

UK school, the Dr Thomlinson Church of England Middle School from Rothbury, Northumberland, has been named as the winner of the 2013 Rolls-Royce Science Prize; an annual competition which celebrates and rewards excellence in science teaching. Each year, Rolls-Royce awards a total of £120,000 in cash prizes to schools who implement motivational science teaching. 2,000 schools and colleges registered for this year's prize, and the winning school was selected from a group of nine finalists who attended an awards ceremony at London's Science Museum.
