China Boosts Australian Coal Imports

Chinese utilities and traders have stepped up purchases of Australian coal in February, encouraged by signs of further policy relaxation after trade partially resumed last month following a two-year hiatus.In early January, Beijing gave permission to four government-backed firms, comprising steel giant Baowu Group and three state utilities, to ship in Australian coal, the first sign of an easing of the unofficial import ban in place since late 2020. BHP Ships 1 bln Tonnes to China

BHP Billiton last night celebrated the shipment of its one billionth tonne of iron ore to China with customers, industrial associations, joint venture partners, suppliers and employees in Shanghai. BHP Billiton’s Chief Executive Officer Andrew Mackenzie was joined by President Iron Ore Jimmy Wilson, President HSE, Marketing and Technology Mike Henry, President Coal Dean Dalla Valle and guests to reveal the commemorative plaque to mark the milestone. Mr Mackenzie said BHP Billiton, a leading global resources company, was proud to contribute to the important trading relationship between China and Australia and to the country’s steel industry. “China is of immense importance to BHP Billiton and to Australia,” he said.

BHP Billiton's Conservation Efforts on the World Stage

Thousands of conservation experts from around the world, including environmental scientists from BHP Billiton, are in Sydney for the 2014 World Parks Congress (WPC). WPC is the preeminent conservation forum and is held every 10 years to share best-practice knowledge in managing protected wilderness areas. BHP Billiton Senior Manager Environment, Erika Korosi joined partnership organisations Conservational International, Tasmanian Land Conservancy and The Nature Conservancy to showcase their collaborative approach to conservation projects. Ms Korosi said she was excited by the opportunity to share knowledge and outcomes from BHP Billiton’s programs at this globally significant event.

BHP Billiton Pledges A$6 mi to Bush Blitz II Project

Alongside partners the Australian Government and Earthwatch, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities today announced a A$6 million contribution to the second stage of the unique species discovery program, Bush Blitz. BHP Billiton’s contribution will be matched by the Australian Government, allowing the program to run until 2017 with A$12 million in funding. Known as Bush Blitz II, the program involves expedition teams conducting flora and fauna surveys across Australia which deepen the scientific knowledge of the country’s unique plants and animals. Bush Blitz II will build on the success of the first stage of the program, which between 2010 and 2013 discovered more than 700 new species of plants and recorded more than 17,000 known species across 65 remote reserves across Australia.
