USDOT Designates Gulfport, MS as a Strategic Port

The Mississippi State Port Authority was notified by the U.S. Department of Transportation Maritime Administration (MARAD) that the Port of Gulfport has been designated as a Strategic Seaport by the Commander, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC). With this designation, America’s military will be able to utilize the Port of Gulfport for cargo and equipment shipments. This announcement adds to South    Mississippi’s extensive military installations and capabilities. This designation is an important step in the Port of Gulfport’s long-range strategy to become one of the country’s top-tier diversified ports. $17.5M Bunkering Contract Awarded

Vane Line Bunkering Inc.*, Baltimore, Md., was awarded on March 14, 2007, a $17,507,083 firm-fixed-price contract for Atlantic Dedicated Barge Transportation Services.Work will be performed in Baltimore, Md., and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2012.Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.There were an unknown number of bids solicited via the World Wide Web on Oct. 17, 2006, and one bid was received.The Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, Alexandria, Va., is the contracting activity (W81GYE-07-C-0005).

Navy Teams with Army for Joint Humanitarian Exercise

Several units of the recently established Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) and Naval Beach Group 2 are participating in the combined DELMAR/Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) exercise on Fort Story, Virginia Beach, Va., in June. The exercise began June 5 and combines active-duty and reserve service members from various Navy and Army commands. The exercise is organized by U.S. Army Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC). During the exercise scenario, these units must work together to provide humanitarian assistance to an area simulated as devastated by a natural disaster. These same skills could be employed if a massive terrorist attack disrupts existing port facilities. "This is like a mission of presence," said Cmdr.
