On July 1st, 2013 Harley Marine Service’s new Z-drive tractor tug, the M/V Robert Franco arrived in Southern California. Harley Marine Service’s new Z-drive tractor tug, the M/V ROBERT FRANCO has arrived in Southern California. This 100’x40’ tractor tug will enter the ship assist and tanker escort market for both Millennium Maritime and Harley Marine Services in Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. This tug features Tier III engines and cold ironing/shore power capabilities. It also marks the second Tier III engine on a ship assist/escort tug boat, meeting EPA’s low emission standards in the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Harley Marine Eco-Tug

Harley Marine Services, Inc. is reducing greenhouse gases, NOx, particulates, and diesel borne air toxics by converting existing harbor tugs to eco-tugs using ultra low emissions technology. Working together with the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach to secure funding through their Technology Advancement Program, the M/V Maverick, a Millennium Maritime, Inc. harbor tug, will be the first tug of the Harley Marine fleet to undertake this “green” clean air retrofit technology. The project involves conversion of existing Port and Starboard engines from mechanical to electronic configuration. The electronic upgrade is expected to achieve Tier II emission limits, which are the limits imposed for new marine engines.

Harley Marine Goes Green

Harley Marine continues to implement its “Harley Marine Goes Green” program, including: company-wide ISO 14001 and ABS SQE Certification; exceeding compliance with local, state and federal environmental regulations and requirements; harbor tug fleet conversion to eco-tugs using ultra low emissions technology; and, their own patented self-contained Vapor Recovery Unit used during petroleum loading operations to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from oil and tank barges. The “Harley Marine Goes Green” campaign was launched in April of 2008 with a contest for the best “green” idea. Harley Marine Announces Reorganization

Harley Marine Services will reorganize its leadership team in order to accommodate customers and field personnel. Jim Lowe has been named general manager for Harley Marine Services, Southern California. In his role, Lowe will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Harley Marine Services family of companies in Southern California including: Millennium Maritime, West Oil Marine Services, Public Service Marine, and Pacific Coast Maritime. He is specifically responsible fore leading the various companies to improve customer service while optimizing operational efficiency. Troy Goodman has been named VP of Corporate Services for Harley Marine Services.

Deliveries

Millennium Maritime began providing ship assist and escort services to the Los Angeles harbor area in. late-April, with the first of two new 4,400 bhp (3,282 bkW) Z-drive sister tugs designed and built by Marco Shipyard. The 105 ft. Millennium Falcon is powered by two Cat 3516B marine diesel engines, each rated 2,200 bhp (1,641 bkW) at 1,600 rpm, supplied by N C Power Systems, Seattle. The electronically controlled Cat engines drive Ulstein stern Z-drive propulsion systems with 94.5 in. four blade propellers inside Ulstein high performance nozzles. The second Millennium vessel is currently under construction at Marco and is scheduled to enter service in. August 2000.

Great Boats of 2000

Every year, MarineNews chooses a handful of vessels delivered in the past 12 months and bestows upon them the distinction of “Great Boats.” The boats are chosen for innovations in design, construction and utilization. Following are the 17 vessels or groups of vessels chosen as the Great Boats of 2000. Crowley Marine Services delivered Alert, Attentive, and Aware, a series of three 140-ft., 10,000-hp Prevention and Response Tugs (PRTs), to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company in Valdez, Alaska. Specifically designed and developed for Alyeska, the boats will be used by Crowley in the Trans Alaska Pipeline System trade. Alert was deployed in February; Attentive was delivered in June, and Aware was delivered in July.

The Efficient Tugboat: The Efficient Tug

In many ports across the country, competition among tugboat operators is intense. The combined Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach is one such competitive environment for tug operators. Three companies vie for business that includes about 6,000 ship arrivals a year. Many of the companies utilize new tractor tugs to guide these ship movements. Foss Maritime, Crowley Marine and Millennium Maritime operate over a dozen modern tugs. Any slight edge in efficiency gives one company a competitive edge. For example, Foss Maritime recently placed the Halter Marine-built Marshall Foss into service. The 6,200 hp tug measures 98 x 40 x 16 ft. "This vessel was purpose built as a harbor tug," said Barry Baldwin, business director for Foss Maritime. Baldwin is located in Long Beach.
