Support to Cyprus Shipping Industry

Cyprus President  Nicos Anastasiades reiterated his Government’s strong support towards the shipping industry and determination to introduce those mechanisms necessary to further enhance it. “I understand from Minister Demetriades that the study is nearing completion and I am, therefore, eager to learn about its findings and see a well-structured `Shipping Strategy` being designed, in order to take Cyprus Shipping into the future” he added. Nicos said he was grateful to the shipping industry, which had managed to help support the economy through the crisis. The sector had managed to escape the brunt “through fully utilizing the comparative advantages Cyprus offers to the shipping industry”.

First Indian Elected on WISTA Board

At the 34th WISTA International AGM & Conference held in Limassol, Cyprus, Sanjam Sahi Gupta, President of WISTA India was elected to the board of WISTA International.She is the first Indian lady and the youngest to be on the board. The conference with the theme: 'Shipping Connects' was supported by Ministry of Communications and Works which include the creation and implementation of government policy in the sectors of transport, communications, public works and antiquities. The current Minister of Communications and Works, Mr. Marios Demetriades attended the program. The conference was attend by over 280 Ladies and Gentlemen from over 30 countries.

Lluavi Puts Mexican Shipbuilding on the Map

Strategic Marine Mexico recently launched the second 170.6 ft Crew Boat, the LLuavi, for Arrendadora Ocean Mexicana (Blue Marine). The two 170.6 ft Crew Boats, Aramara and Lluavi, has seen Blue Marine become the only Mexican ship owner to build offshore vessels in Mexico. “Not only is this project a huge achievement for Strategic Marine, but for the Mexican community at large, helping to create over 160 jobs in total. We are confident the Mexican shipping industry will take note, and place a higher priority on in-country investments such as these,” stated Ron F Anderson, Managing Director. Schubert to Lead Delegation to China

Maritime Administrator William G. Schubert announced that he will lead a delegation to China to conduct discussions with the Chinese government in Beijing, March 19-21. A central topic of these talks will be the Regulations on International Maritime Transportation that were issued by China’s Ministry of Communications in December 2001. These regulations appear to impose sweeping new restrictions on U.S. and other non-Chinese maritime companies, affecting shipping companies, shippers, and intermediaries. In addition to discussing the new maritime regulations, Captain Schubert will discuss U.S. maritime carriers’ operations in the People’s Republic of China which have been restricted by Chinese government controls for several years…

Everard to address China WTO Shipping Summit

BIMCO's President, Michael Everard, has been invited to chair the opening session of the China World Trade Organization (WTO) Shipping Summit, which will be held in Shanghai, China, from 18 to 19 April 2002. After making the opening remarks on the first day, Mr. Everard will introduce the panel, which includes: Mr. Administration Department, Ministry of Communications (MOC); Mr. Cooperation (MOFTEC); Captain Wei Jiafu, President of China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) and member of the BIMCO Executive Committee; Mr. Dirk Fry, President of the International Ship Managers As-sociation (ISMA); Mr. Todd Pigeon, Vice President of Maersk Data USA Inc.; Mr. Flemming R. Death Toll Rises in China Sea Ship Collision

According to Xinhua, the death toll from an accident in the East China Sea rose to nine on when rescuers retrieved another body from a cargo ship that sank after colliding with another ship late on Saturday night. Twelve sailors have been rescued but eight others are still missing, sources with the maritime safety administration of Zhejiang Province revealed on Monday. The collision occurred at around 11 pm on Saturday near the Langgang islands, northeast of Zhoushan Island, Zhejiang Province, when a cargo ship belonging to a transport company in Shenzhen crashed into another one registered in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong ship, "Huirong", sank immediately and all its 29 sailors on board were marooned out at sea.

Ship Collision Kills Three

Three Chinese sailors aboard a cargo ship were killed and nine others are missing following a collision with another vessel near Inchon Port of the Republic of Korea (ROK) yesterday. Five sailors were saved by press time last night, according to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Centre under the Ministry of Communications. The ROK maritime police sent 40 boats and one helicopter to search for the missing sailors after the boat sunk in the crash. The 2,972-ton cargo ship, Xinhai7, was registered in the island country of Tuvalu in the southern Pacific Ocean by Sinbei International Shipping, a Hong Kong company. It ran into a 3,980-ton Korea Gas vessel yesterday, when it was entering the port. The Korea Gas ship only sustained minor damage with all its crew reported safe.

67 Ships Join Search in China

67 ships and 2,377 people are searching for the 31 Chinese sailors who went missing after a Panamanian freighter ran aground in the sea area off East China's Fujian Province last week. The rescue operation has been extended to a wider area of sea, including areas near local islands and polders. The accident occurred when the ship, Heng Da 1, hit a reef. All 37 Chinese crew members fell overboard. So far only two of the crew members have been saved and the bodies of four victims recovered. The 31 others are still missing. The East China Sea Salvage Bureau under the Ministry of Communications dispatched a 14-member rescue team, including 10 divers and engineers, to join the rescue efforts. Strong wind and high waves have hampered the rescue operation. (Source: www.hindu.com)

Chinese Maritime Industry to See Development

Reports indicate that China's maritime industry has been on a rapid growth path, according to sources from the 2005 China International Maritime Exhibition in Shanghai Friday. The combined tonnage of China's shipbuilding has ranked third in the world in a succession of 11 years. By the end of 2005, Shanghai will realize a total of 4 million tons in shipbuilding. As of 2004, China had built 34,000 berths and 1,430 ports in the mainland, eight of which have bounded into the world's 100-million-ton ports. During the four-day exhibition, about 1,000 companies from 28 countries and regions showed their latest and most sophisticated technology and service. For the first time, Spain sent a group to the exhibition and the German group registered the largest one overseas.

IMO Prize for Martinez

The prestigious International Maritime Prize for 2004 has been presented to Mr. Luis Martínez of Mexico, who has spent a lifetime in high profile positions in the maritime sector and is currently a fishing vessel owner. Mr. Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, presented the prize to Mr. Martínez during a special ceremony (on Thursday, 17 November) at IMO’s London Headquarters during the Organization’s 23rd Extraordinary Council session, which precedes the Organization’s 24th Assembly, to be held from 21 November to 2 December. The International Maritime Prize is awarded annually by IMO to the individual or organization judged to have made the most significant contribution to the work and objectives of IMO.
