New Maritime Rescue Radar Systems Launched

Photo: Fraunhofer FHR

When a person goes overboard, finding her or him quickly is crucial in order to have a chance of rescuing the shipwrecked person. With the SEERAD project, Fraunhofer FHR is joining forces with FH Aachen and Raytheon Anschütz GmbH to develop a new sea rescue radar that is not only capable of reliably locating individual persons or small boats over long distances but also cheaper than the current systems. With this system, small transponders located in life jackets, for instance, will reflect the signals of future maritime radars, which then receive these signals using an extension module.

Tropical Coral reefs lose their Zooplankton through Ocean Acidification

Tropical coral reefs lose up to two thirds of their zooplankton through ocean acidification. This is the conclusion reached by a German-Australian research team that examined two reefs with so-called carbon dioxide seeps off the coast of Papua New Guinea. At these locations volcanic carbon dioxide escapes from the seabed, lowering the water’s acidity to a level, which scientists predict for the future of the oceans. The researchers believe that the decline in zooplankton is due to the loss of suitable hiding places. It results from the changes in the coral reef community due to increasing acidification. Instead of densely branched branching corals, robust mounding species of hard coral grow, offering the zooplankton little shelter.

LNG Cargo Handling Under Arctic Conditions R&D

Nordic Yards sets up a new test track as a 'cooling zone' to test 3 models of the yard's own-design LNG cargo tanks. A new test track has been inaugurated at the Warnemünde location of Nordic Yards. The cooling zone is being used to test three models, so-called mock-ups, developed as part of the POLAR Alliance. These models, all of which are Nordic Yards' own designs on a scale of 1:1, represent an LNG cargo handling system, but are being tested independently of one another for reasons of precision. The test models include a double barrier tank (Aluminium Double Barrier Tank, ADBT), an LNG deck line with de-icing system and a double-walled bunker line. The models are now being tested for three months alternately on the 15 metre-long test track at cryogenic temperatures.

Hybrid Powering for Boxships

A convincing economic argument fuels the liner shipping sector's adoption of unprecedented capacity ratings, with a new level soon to be reached in impending projects for newbuilds in the 9,000-TEU category, and technical work set in train for ships in the 10,000-12,500 TEU category. Experts believe that behemoths of 18,000-TEU could be in service on specific volume trades within a decade, yielding unit operating cost savings in the order of 30-percent relative to the 5,000-TEU size. The enormous infrastructural implications attached to nurturing a new generation of ultra-large container vessels seem to be less daunting now compared with even a year ago…
