Singapore yard Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) said that its wholly-owned subsidiary Keppel Singmarine will develop an autonomous tug that will be operated by Keppel Smit Towage.The tug is expected to be one of Singapore’s first autonomous vessels when the project is completed in 4Q 2020.To develop the autonomous tug, Keppel O&M has secured a grant of up to S$2 million from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) under its Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund (MINT FUND).This follows the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Keppel O&M, MPA and the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS) in April 2018 to jointly develop autonomous vessels for a variety of applications including undertaking harbour operations such as channelling…

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is rolling out a series of new manpower schemes to attract, develop and retain local talent in the maritime sector. The Government will set aside S$12 million over the next two years to roll out a series of manpower schemes. Some 5,000 individuals are expected to benefit from the new manpower schemes, which will be rolled out progressively from May 1, 2016. A Maritime Career Conversion scheme will help Singaporeans and permanent residents re-skill in order to take on good jobs in the maritime industry. It will co-fund a structured training programme for the participants and their wages for the first six months, with the target to benefit 100 to 120 individuals with no industry background in two years.

The Port of Singapore, regarded as a leading bunkering hub, is poised to expand its offering of marine fuel solutions to include LNG. In line with these efforts, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has taken another step toward the planned 2017 launch of the LNG Bunkering Pilot Program (LBPP) which aims to establish Singapore as a key LNG bunkering hub in Asia. The Port of Singapore is inviting interested companies to tap on a S$12 million fund, from the MPA's "Maritime Innovation & Technology Fund" (MINT Fund), for the building of LNG-fuelled vessels.

The new initiatives were announced by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, at the recent opening of the Sea Asia Exhibition and Conference, held in conjunction with the concurrant Singapore Maritime Week 2013. "Maritime is an important part of Singapore and contributes some 7% of Singapore's GDP. MPA is committed to working in partnership with the industry and institutes of higher learning (IHLs) in developing Maritime Singapore and are pleased to work with the industry and IHLs on the new initiatives and investments in maritime R&D, productivity and manpower development," said Mr Lam Yi Young, Chief Executive of MPA.

LiqTech International, Inc. has unced that LiqTech Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of LiqTech International, has been awarded the MINT (Maritime Innovation & Technology) Fund for the development of a Ballast Water Treatment System. LiqTech Pte Ltd based in Singapore will be test-bedding its proprietary Silicon Carbide (SiC) membrane to configure a high efficiency and robust filtration solution for BWTS to meet the standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). General Manager LiqTech Pte, Mr. Kum Leong Lee commented, "We are very pleased with the support and recognition by The Maritime and Port of Authority of Singapore (MPA). We see a great potential for SiC membranes to provide a high filtration performance not seen in the marketplace today.

A Joint Industry Project (JIP), co-funded through MPA’s MINT fund, is aimed to provide recommendations to the Singapore government authorities on enabling LNG bunkering in Singapore, ensuring operational safety, alignment with industry expectations and best practice, and compliance with relevant international rules, regulations and standards. LNG bunkering is a process of refuelling ships by transferring LNG fuel from the LNG carrying trucks, barges or onshore tanks.
