HMD's Ammonia-powered LPG Carrier Designs Earn DNV Approval

DNV has awarded HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard an approval in principle (AIP) for the design of ammonia dual fuel 45,000 m3 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers.The presentation took place at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center (GRC) in Seongnam, Korea. DNV Issues General Approval for Hybrid Support Structure

DNV has presented HD Hyundai with a general approval for ship application (GASA) for a new high-strength composite hybrid support system for independent tanks on liquefied gas carriers.In a world-first, HD Hyundai’s concept is fabricated with a fusion of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) with a tensile strength 10 times greater than steel, significantly enhancing structural stability.The new system offers robust structural supports, enabling independent tanks to withstand upward force from floatation in case of hold space flooded.

Crowley Unveils New LNG-fueled Containerships

U.S. shipping company Crowley has shared first renderings and the names of its four new dual fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containerships: Quetzal, Copan, Tiscapa and Torogoz.The 1,400 TEU vessels were ordered in 2022 by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) for scheduled delivery from South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in 2025.EPS will charter the ships out to Crowley, who will deploy them on its U.S.-Central America trade connecting U.S. markets to Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

MOL Signs Charter Contract with Yara for Ammonia Carrier

Japanese shipping major Mitsui O.S.K. Exmar Orders Ammonia-Powered Midsize Gas Carriers

Exmar LPG has ordered two ammonia-powered Midsize Gas Carriers (MGCs) from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea.According to the company, a joint venture between EXMAR and Seapeak, the ships will be the first-ever oceangoing vessels to be propelled by dual-fuel ammonia engines, allowing for close to zero emissions trading when using ammonia. DNV Awards AiP to HD KSOE’s Hydrogen System for LH2 Carrier

DNV has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and its subsidiaries HD Hyundai Heavy Industry (HD HHI) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) for their new hydrogen system.HD KSOE aims to complete the development of the hydrogen carrier technology that enables large-capacity hydrogen transportation and storage by around 2030.HD KSOE's new system utilizes boil-off gas from hydrogen transport for a hybrid propulsion system, integrating hydrogen dual-fuel engines and fuel cells.

Equinor to Supply Fuel for Maersk's Methanol-powered Containership

Danish shipping company A.P. Moller - Maersk announced it has signed an agreement with Norwegian energy company Equinor to secure supply of methanol for its new methanol-enabled feeder vessel during its initial months of operation from September 2023 and into the first half of 2024.The agreement ensures methanol supply for the ship from its entry into operation on a loop from Northern Europe into the Baltic Sea after the name giving ceremony later this month in Copenhagen. Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) announced it has granted approval in principle (AIP) to South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) for its new 45,000cbm liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier design, with availability to be ordered with ammonia dual-fueled propulsion. The dual fuel system equipped on HMD’s LPG carrier allows operators and owners to prioritize their environmental, societal and governance (ESG) strategies for their fleets and align with the IMO’s revised goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

Maersk's Methanol Ship Makes Maiden Refueling in Rotterdam

Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has signed a contract to build two 22,000 cubic meter liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers worth KRW 179 billion ($142 million) for the Capital Maritime Group of Greece.The vessels will be 159.9 meters long, 27.4 meters wide and 17.8 meters high. Scorpio Sells 2013-built Tanker for $32.5 Million

Scorpio Tankers announced it has sold a medium range (MR) product tanker for $32.5 million.The Monaco-headquartered shipowner said the sale closed this month, but did not disclose the buyer.The vessel is the 183-meter-long STI Ville, built in 2013 by South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.Scorpio noted that the ship is unencumbered and that it will make no debt repayments associated with the sale.Scorpio Tankers currently owns, lease finances leases or bareboat charters-in 112 product tankers, including 39 LR2 tankers, 59 MR tankers and 14 Handymax tankers.

Maersk has taken delivery of the world’s first container feeder to be fueled by methanol.The 2,100 TEU vessel was built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and Hyundai Heavy Industries and features dual fuel main and auxiliary engines from MAN Energy Solutions that are able to operate on cleaner-burning methanol.The ABS-classed vessel, HMD Hull #4168, is embarking on its maiden voyage from Ulsan to Copenhagen for a naming ceremony in September, when the ships is expected to take the name Laura Maersk.
