Seanergy Picks Up Capesize Bulker

Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp. announced Tuesday it has entered into an agreement with an unaffiliated third party to purchase a secondhand Capesize vessel for “prompt delivery”.The vessel Geniuship, to be renamed Goodship, was built in 2005 at Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in Japan, and has a cargo-carrying capacity of approximately 177,536 deadweight tons.Following her delivery, the Seanergy fleet will increase to 11 Capesize vessels with an aggregate cargo capacity of approximately 1,926,117 dwt, the company said.

ICTSI Manila Adds More Equipments

The port and terminal operator International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) said that  its flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT)  recently took delivery of another new quay crane (QC) and eight new hybrid rubber tired gantries (RTGs).According to a press release, the terminal has the largest fleet of modern container-handling equipment in the Philippines today with 18 QCs and 58 RTGs.Manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. (ZPMC), the QC is part of the five from ICTSI’s 2018 USD80-million capacity improvement program package. With a reach of up to 16 rows across twin, the new QC can service the largest feeder vessels calling the Philippines.

MICT Gets Eco-Friendly RTGs

International Container Terminal Services, Inc.'s (ICTSI) flagship Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) has received four of 16 new hybrid rubber-tired gantries (RTG) as part of the Company’s long-term investment in capacity enhancement and environmental efficiency."A first in Philippines and Manufactured by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. (MES) of Japan, the Mitsui Li-ion Hybrid RTG is equipped with a 200kVA Li-ion battery and a smaller diesel engine that dramatically improves the carbon footprint of the terminal," said a press release from ICTSI.Once fully commissioned, the hybrid RTGs are expected to further boost MICT’s container yard productivity…

NYK to Sponsor Shell XPrize Finalist

NYK has agreed to sponsor Team KUROSHIO,* a finalist in the Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE competition, by providing the transportation for the team’s unmanned robots, which are being used in this international competition to quickly and accurately map the ocean floor. Team KUROSHIO has participated in this competition over the past three years, and after passing through the technical documentation stage and an actual ocean test in Round 1, the team has advanced to Round 2, the final round, to be held in October 2018. The research team is the only Japanese representative remaining in the competition, and during the final round will be asked to map at least 250 square kilometers of ocean floor in 24 hours at ocean depths up to 4,000 meters. The results will be announced in December 2018.

Mitsui Delivers Bulker to Ostria Marine

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) completed and delivered a 66,000 dwt type bulk carrier M.V. "CHRISTINA" (MES Hull No.1919) at its Tamano Works on 15th March, 2018 to Ostria Marine Co., Marshall Islands. This is the 16th ship of our "neo66BC", the "wide beam shallow draft vessel" of our line-up “neo series”. Service Speed abt. * The vessel has four (4) cranes and five (5) cargo holds, and keeps the superior usability of our 56BC. * The vessel is designed to have enough deadweight more than 66,000 metric tons and capacity more than 82,800 cubic meters for loading various cargos like coal, ore, grain, as well as lengthy/heavy cargo such as steel pipe and hot coil. * Fuel oil consumption is less than that of a conventional Supramax bulk carrier despite its enlargement.

MES Delivers 66,000 DWT Bulk Carrier

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) said it has completed and delivered a 66,000 dwt bulk carrier to owner Ostria Marine Co. The newbuild, M.V. Christina, was delivered at the builder's Tamano Works on March 15, 2018. The vessel has four cranes and five cargo holds, with more than 82,800 cubic meters cargo capacity. The ship’s main engine, a MITSUI-MAN B&W 7S50ME-B9.3 diesel engine, complies with MARPOL NOx restriction (Tier-II) for exhaust gas emissions. The ship has low sulfur fuel oil tanks, which are designed for operation in Emission Control Areas (ECA). Service Speed: abt.

MOL Adopts 'Common Rail Fuel Injection' System

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that its group company, Mitsui O.S.K. Kinkai, Ltd. will use a main engine equipped with the MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MDT)-developed “common rail fuel injection system” on a newbuilding vessel. Shop test of the main engine was completed on January 29 and the vessel is slated for launching in 2018. After launched, Mitsui O.S.K. Kinkai, MDT and Makita Corporation(President: Yu Makita; headquarters: Takamatsu-shi, Kagawa Prefecture)will continue testing the system with support from MOL while the vessel is in service. The pilot engine for MDT, manufactured by Makita Corporation,  is the first to adopt the MAN B&W 2 Cycle engine.

MES, TSUNEISHI Form Shipbuilding Alliance

Two more Japanese shipyards have formed a business alliance as the nation’s shipbuilders continue to struggle against an industry downturn. Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) and TSUNEISHI Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. say they will collaborate on commercial shipbuilding and design, becoming the latest in a string of Japanese shipbuilders to form similar partnerships in attempts to better compete with yards in China and South Korea. The two companies are still discussing specific conditions for the agreement, but say they will remain independent.

M/Maritime Adds Olympia, Orders 3 Bulkers in Japan

Olympia GR, a 61,222 DWT Ultramax dry bulk carrier, has been successfully delivered to M/Maritime Corp from Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. Recently, the clients of M/Maritime Corp. signed two shipbuilding contracts for the acquisition of two 60,200 DWT bulk carriers to be built at Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. Both vessels, under Hull No. 1961 and Hull No. 1962 are scheduled to be delivered to their Owners between second half of 2019 and first half of 2020. Their full management will be entrusted to M/Maritime Corp. The clients of M/Maritime has also signed a shipbuilding contract for the acquisition of one 37,000 DWT bulk carrier to be built at Saiki Heavy Industries, Onomichi dockyard. Imabari to Acquire Minaminippon Shipbuilding

Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has reached an initial agreement to acquire compatriot Japanese shipbuilder Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The takeover, which remains subject to further discussions before the deal is concluded, would take effect April 1, 2018. Minaminippon’s present shareholders include Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (25 percent) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (24 percent).

ClassNK CMAXS for Two MOL Ships

ClassNK Consulting Service Co., Ltd. developed next-generation diagnostic monitoring system “ClassNK CMAXS” has been chosen by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) for installation on two more ships operated by the company. The system is now installed on a total of six MOL-operated ships. The two ships are installed with CMAXS e-GICSX, a system which monitors electrically controlled main engine supplied by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and CMAXS LC-A for auxiliary engines supplied by DAIHATSU DIESEL MFG. CO, LTD. Both CMAXS systems operate simultaneously, gathering information from VDR, data logger and main engine. This information (Big Data) is consolidated on a common platform for analysis and the potential future improvement.

MOL Introduces Autonomous Ocean Transport System

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that its joint project with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. on developing a technological concept for autonomous ocean transport system, was selected by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism (MLIT) for its FY2017 Transportation Research and Technology Promotion Program (Note) on May 16, 2017. The research consortium of the project is comprised of MOL, Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, the National Institute of Maritime, Port and Aviation Technology, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), Japan Ship Technology Research Association, and Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen) Inc.

MAN Diesel & Turbo, MES Grow Partnership

A new cooperation agreement will intensify existing joint business activities between longstanding partners MAN Diesel & Turbo and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES). The agreement was signed by Takao Tanaka, President & CEO of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, and Dr. Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Diesel & Turbo. “Together, we will offer a solution portfolio that is unique in today’s market,” said Dr. Lauber. Expanding upon multiple previous collaborations, the two companies have now agreed to deepen mutual activities within sales, production, R&D and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) initially, with the potential for other business fields to be added in the future. The common goal is to enhance mutual business opportunities in a more timely and effective fashion.

Mitsui Delivers Bulker Ionic Unicorn

Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has completed and delivered a 60,000 dwt type bulk carrier M.V. Ionic Unicorn (MES Hull No. 1905) at its Chiba Works on March 28, 2016 to Ionic Unicorn Inc., Marshall Islands. The vessel is the 11th ship of the builder’s neo60BC, the third Eco-Ship line up of its neo series. Designed for loading various cargos like coal, ore, grain, as well as lengthy/heavy cargo such as steel pipe and hot coil, the ship has four cranes and five cargo holds, and keeps with the usability of Mitsui 56, the builder said. The size of hatch opening is the largest for this type of vessel in terms of both length and width.

First ME-GIE Ethane Engine Unveiled at Mitsui

Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has completed the world’s first ME-GIE ethane-operated two-stroke diesel engine. The engines will be for propulsion of three ethylene carriers, which will also carry ethane as cargo. The Mitsui-MAN B&W 7G50ME-C9.5-GIE is the first engine in a series of three for installation in three LEG (liquefied ethylene gas) carriers of 36,000 m3 for Hartmann Schiffahrt of Germany and Ocean Yield of Norway, being built at Sinopacific Offshore Engineering (SOE) in China. MAN Diesel & Turbo reports that ethane was chosen as fuel, in preference to HFO, due to its more competitive pricing as well as the significantly shorter bunkering time it entails.

Ultra Large Tug Alp Striker Delivered

From Japan's Niigata Shipbuilding & Repair, Inc. (NSR), fully owned by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., comes the first in four of a series of ultra large, ultra powerful tugs. The first in line is dubbed Alp Striker,  delivered to Alp Striker BV (ship owning company of ALP Maritime Services BV, Netherlands ) in early September 2016. Alp Striker is one of strongest and largest towing vessels in the world, able to sail to a top speed of 19.16 knots, 13 knots in ordinal sailing and to tow 309.6 tons.
