6.8 magnitude Quake in East Japan Tiggers a Minor Tsunami
An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 occurred on Saturday off the eastern coast of Japan, triggering a small tsunami with waves up to 20 inches, but no damage on the northeast coast of the country will be reported, local meteorological agency said. Northeastern Japan was devastated by a catastrophic tsunami in March 2011. No irregularities were reported at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, which was severely damaged by the disaster of 2011, which caused the worst nuclear accident in the world since the Chernobyl meltdown in Ukraine in 1986. The earthquake reached category 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of 1-7, which means that there is little chance that generated serious damage.
JASNAOE Award for MOL Energy Recovery System
Mitsui OSK Lines, Ltd. today announced receipt of the 2014 Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE) Award for development of a waste heat energy recovery system for marine diesel engine used to generate electric power and assist ship propulsion. The system was installed on a MOL-operated large-scale iron ore carrier. The award was made in ceremonies held in Sendai International Center, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, on May 26, 2014. The system was jointly developed by MOL, Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.
Japanese Town to Scrap 'Tsunami Boat'
A Japanese town has decided to scrap a marooned fishing boat which has become a symbol of the devastating 2011 tsunami reports the BBC. Residents of Kesennuma in Miyagi prefecture voted to scrap the Kyotoku Maru No 18 which was swept inland by a giant wave triggered by the earthquake although there had been plans to preserve the vessel as a monument. after the disaster, according to the BBC report, people started visiting the marooned 60-metre (200-foot) boat to pray, take photographs and leave flowers.
Japan Shipbuilder Launches First Ship Following Tsunami Disaster
Yamanishi Corp, located in Tsumami disaster zone, Miyagi Prefecture, launches its first ship 20 months after the destruction. A 695-ton training ship built by Yamanishi Corp. has been officially launched at the firm's shipyard in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. The disasters cost the company around ¥12 billion. With only ¥1.5 billion in subsidies from the government, the company managed to stay afloat with cooperation from shipbuilders in other parts of Japan, including firms in Shizuoka, Hyogo and Hiroshima prefectures, reports The Japan Times. Yamanishi was able to draw up a rehabilitation plan in February, under the government-backed Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp. of Japan. The plan included a debt waiver of some ¥7.9 billion, covering 99 percent of the company's total debts.
Celebration on Reconstruction of Japan Earthquake Devasted Port
NYK Group company, held a get-together on board its 58,000-ton bulk carrier New Pride with guests from the Ishinomaki area in Miyagi prefecture to celebrate the installation of a new mechanical unloader (cargo handling machinery) at the port’s No. 7 Hiyori wharf and to pray for the further recovery and development of the port. Two of the port’s three unloaders toppled into the sea during the Great East Japan Earthquake and ensuing tsunami, and the port’s handling capacity had since been reduced significantly.
Post-quake Update on MOL-operated Vessels: Bulker C.S. Victory Safe after Grounding During Tsunami
ROTTERDAM, 18 March 2011 – Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President: Koichi Muto) reported that all the crew have returned to the MOL-chartered bulker C.S. Victory, which was carried toward a breakwater by the tsunami and grounded in the shallow harbor at Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, on Friday, March 11.
