Bangladesh Police Investigating Deadly Container Depot Fire

Police in Bangladesh on Wednesday opened an investigation into eight officials from a shipping container depot after a blaze killed at least 44 people, including 10 firefighters, and injured around 200 others, officials said.Firefighters put out the blaze at the depot in Sitakunda, 40 km (25 miles) from the southeastern port city of Chittagong, on Wednesday, four days after it began late on Saturday, triggering a series of explosions.The investigation was opened into officials who were directly involved operating the depot on suspicion of negligence and mismanagement…

US: Russian Ship Suspected of Aiding N.Korea

The U.S. government has named a Russian ship on a list of vessels suspected of providing fuel to Pyongyang, a month after Reuters reported the same ship violated sanctions by carrying out a clandestine transfer to a North Korean tanker.The Treasury Department, which oversees U.S. sanctions, included the Russian vessel, the Tantal, on a new list of "vessels believed to have engaged in ship-to-ship transfers with North Korean tankers."The list was included in updated https://www.treasury.gov/resource-center/sanctions/Programs/Documents/dprk_vessel_advisory_03212019.pdf guidance on addressing North Korea's illicit shipping practices published by the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Russian Markets Hit as Putin tightens Grip on Crimea

Moscow stocks fall 10 pct, rouble down 2.5 pct over war jitters. Ukraine border guards say build-up of Russian armoured vehicles near Crimea. EU ministers meet but no immediate sanctions expected. Russia took a financial hit over its military intervention in neighbouring Ukraine, with its markets and currency plunging on Monday as President Vladimir Putin's forces tightened their grip on the Russian-speaking Crimea region. The Moscow stock market fell by 10 percent and the central bank spent $10 billion of its reserves to prop up the rouble as investors took fright at escalating tensions with the West over the former Soviet republic.

Iceland's On-Waves selects Delaware's IMSWorkX feature rich service delivery platform for its cruise & merchant ship mobile telephone service. Maritime mobile operator On-Waves Ehf, a subsidiary of Icelandic global telecom service provider Siminn (formerly Iceland Telecom), has selected the XpressWorkX Service Delivery Platform from IMSWorkX, Inc. as a base from which to enhance its range of rich IP-based mobile telephony services on cruise ships and merchant marine vessels. The On-Waves customer base of vessels is diverse, multi-national and multi-lingual. Egyptian Crisis: Could it Spill into the Suez Canal?

As analysts continue to try and gauge the full economic impact of the fast-evolving political and social crisis in Egypt, the concern of the shipping industry are centered on the Egypt controlled Suez Canal, a transport route for a substantial amount of the world's energy, with more than 35,000 ships passing through the Suez annually, approximately 2,700 of them tankers. Worries regarding potential canal disruption stem in part from the the Egyptian government's cut-off Internet and mobile telephone service in the country on Friday. Shares in tanker companies surged on Friday on fears of a Suez shutdown. If that were to happen, many ships would have to make more costly trips around the southern tip Africa to reach their destinations, yielding more revenue for the shipping interests.

CG Rescues Yacht Harassed by Whales

Brixham Coastguard recently received an emergency 999 call on a mobile phone from a lone yachtsman who had suffered engine failure, and was being harassed by a pod of whales. The yachtsman called Brixham Coastguard via his mobile telephone after suffering an engine and total power failure and being unsure of his position. His situation was further exacerbated by the fact his vessel was being harassed by a pod of whales. Upon receiving the phone call from this gentleman, who was unsure of his position due to his lack of power and not being in sight of land, he was asked to use his handheld VHF radio which he had on board. Prawle point Coastguard rescue team, Salcombe RNLI lifeboat and R193 from RNAS Culdrose who had just completed another mission were all called to assist in the search.

Reinert Joins MAN B&W Board

Large engine manufacturer MAN B&W Diesel AG of Augsburg is expanding its Executive Board. The company’s Supervisory Board has appointed Tage Reinert as a member of the Executive Board responsible for controlling. 1 September 2005 at the latest. The other members of the company’s Executive Board include the Chairman of the Executive Board of MAN AG, Håkan Samuelsson, who serves as working chairman, Fritz Pape as deputy chairman, Dr. Stefan Spindler, Dr. Peter Sunn Pedersen and Dr. Stephan Timmermann. Tage Reinert comes to the company from the Danish mobile telephone operator Sonofon in Copenhagen, where he served as Executive Vice-President and CFO from 1999 and more recently held the position of Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for a period of one year.
