Ammonia-powered Tug Conversion Underway

A first-of-its-kind ammonia-powered, zero-emission tugboat will be put to the test by Brooklyn, N.Y-based startup Amogy in late 2023.Having already successfully demonstrated its technology on an aerial drone, tractor and semi-truck, the ammonia power solutions company revealed in early March that it is retrofitting a scaled up 1-megawatt (MW) version of its ammonia-to-power system onto a tug at Feeney Shipyard in Kingston, N.Y. as a test run for its emissions-slashing power and propulsion technology in the commercial maritime sector.Once installed…

TDI-Brooks Installs Starlink on Its Research Vessels

U.S. based marine services firm TDI-Brooks announced it has installed the Starlink Maritime platform on two of its four research vessels, with plans to equip the remaining vessels at a later date.The two vessels, Brooks McCall and Miss Emma McCall, are currently working on the U.S. East Coast performing G&G surveys for offshore wind programs. Marlink Announced as Telenor Satellite’s Platinum Partner

Telenor Satellite has announced that Marlink, a worldwide satellite communications provider, has been assigned Platinum Service Provider status for the provision of services on the THOR 7 satellite. Marlink is now integrating its full range of Value Added Services into the THOR 7 product offering, providing high-throughput connectivity to Marlink’s regional vessels across all its market segments, ranging from fishing and commercial shipping to high-end yachts and passenger vessels. “Demand for both reliable and cost-effective connections at sea continues to grow rapidly due to the increased use of IP applications such as broadband internet access, VOIP, video streaming and improved access to corporate networks,” said Tore Morten Olsen, President of Marlink.

Intelsat Reports First Quarter 2013 Results

Intelsat S.A., a  provider of satellite services, reported financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2013. Intelsat S.A. reported revenue of $655.1 million and a net loss of $7.8 million, or $0.09 per share, for the three months ended March 31, 2013. The company also reported EBITDA1, or earnings before net interest, taxes and depreciation and amortization, of $496.8 million, and Adjusted EBITDA1 of $505.8 million, or 77 percent of revenue, for the three months ended March 31, 2013. Contracted backlog at March 31, 2013, was $10.4 billion.

Solar Panel in Sail R&D Collaboration

Eco Marine Power (EMP) to collaborate with Solbian Energie Alternative Srl of Italy to develop marine solar power applications. Initially this co-operation will be centred around lab testing activities in Osaka, Japan, with the focus being on incorporating Solbian's technology into EMP's EnergySail – a configurable rigid sail that is able to tap into the power of the wind & sun. However it is planned to expand the range of testing later this year to also include sea trials & apply Solbian technology to other projects such as the AquariusUSV and Aquarius Eco Ship.

Global IP Extends Mobility Offering with Intelsat

Global IP to introduce Ku-band maritime services to oil, gas and energy customers across the vast Indian Ocean region. Intelsat S.A., a  provider of satellite services, announced today that Spain-based Global IP, a provider of satellite communications for maritime, energy and corporate customers, has signed multi-year agreements allowing it to provide broadband service to its maritime customers in the Indian Ocean region. Global IP will use capacity on Intelsat 22 at 72° East, Intelsat 702 at 33° East, and the IntelsatOneSM terrestrial network to introduce advanced mobility services. Global IP will collocate its DVB-S2 high-throughput platform at Intelsat's teleport in Fuchsstadt, Germany, enabling access to the IntelsatOne infrastructure and Intelsat's satellite fleet.
