Levesque Named President of CMA CGM America

MSC Gulsun Arrives Rotterdam Port

World's largest container ship the MSC Gülsün arrived yesterday (August 03) at the APMT 2 terminal quay in the Rotterdam harbour and will remain there until Thursday afternoon.The vessel, 400 meters long and with a beam of 62 meters, has a 23,756-TEU (twenty-foot standard containers) capacity, making it the world’s largest container ship.MSC Gülsün is the first container ship capable of transporting 24 containers side by side across the breadth of its hull. Port of Kiel: More than 2.2 mln Passengers This Year

The economic importance of nautical tourism for Schleswig-Holstein is continuing to increase. More than 2.2 million passengers are expected in the port of Kiel alone this year, forecasting record numbers like 600,000 cruise passengers and 1.6 million ferry travelers.Last year, passengers generated a turnover of about 68 million Euros in Kiel. The consumer spending of the port’s ferry passengers amounts to more than 53 million Euros. These are complemented by another 15 million Euros spent by cruise passengers and the crews.

Long Beach Container Counts Soft

The Port of Long Beach said shifting alliance routes and the Hanjin bankruptcy continued to affect its volumes in November, when container traffic was 13.8 percent lower than the same month last year. A total of 534,308 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) were moved through the harbor last month. Imports fell 11.8 percent to 270,610 TEU. Exports declined 3.1 percent to 120,897 TEU, while empty TEUs numbered 142,801, 24.2 percent off. The port experienced its second-best November ever in 2015…

Management Appointments at Modern Terminals

Modern Terminals Limited (MTL), Hong Kong’s longest established container terminal operator, today announced the appointment of Mr. Keith Saunders as its new Managing Director – Hong Kong, effective from 1st February 2016. Mr. Saunders will lead Modern Terminals’ Brand Promises initiatives in Hong Kong, especially in the areas of operational excellence, innovation and infrastructure development. Mr. Saunders brings three decades of container terminal and operating systems experience to Modern Terminals. China Merchants Profit up 29pct

While China’s ports continue to face growth pressure, the country’s largest port operator is reaping the rewards of years of investments in overseas projects. China Merchants Holdings (International) reported first-half net profit rose 29 per cent to HK$2.78 billion  ($US 361 million)  from a year ago, after throughput gains at Chinese terminals exceeded China’s overall container growth rate and traffic through overseas facilities rose at a double-digit clip. The profit is driven by steady growth from ports and contributions from overseas greenfield projects. Chairman Li Jianhong said he expected the growth of mainland operations to slow, but noted an overall growth in the second half can be sustained.

Virginia Port Deploys Hybrid Shuttle Carriers

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has delivered the three hybrid shuttle carriers ordered by The Port of Virginia in late 2014, to Virginia International Gateway terminal (VIG) in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA. The environmentally advanced units have been in action in VIG since last week. Cargo volumes at VIG are growing and the terminal's operations team seeks to increase container handling capacity while furthering its commitment to environmental values. Peel Ports introduces Training Simulator on Site

In anticipation of the arrival of five of the world’s largest cranes at the Port of Liverpool in the autumn, Peel Ports has introduced a state-of-the-art ‘virtual’ training simulator on site, designed to ensure all operators are ready to manoeuvre the giant structures from Day One of installation. Peel Ports has been working closely with ABB, a global leader in automation, to produce a customised, high-tech training simulator tailored to interactively test the abilities and skills of drivers by presenting them with realistic, operating scenarios. The Company has invested over £500,000 in developing the simulator and the associated software.

Trelleborg Report Optimistic for Port Investment

The latest 'Barometer Report' from Trelleborg's marine operations business sector, discusses the issues impacting ports and terminals around the globe, and reveals the most optimistic outlook on investment since the annual industry survey began in 2010, with 93% of port owners and operators expecting capital expenditure budgets to increase over the next twelve months and 88% expecting operational expenditure budgets to grow too. An overwhelming 98% of consultants and contractors also said they expect capital and operational expenditure budgets to increase. So, despite other challenges revealed by the report, the overall picture is optimistic.

Navis say that container terminal operators Modern Terminals Limited has gone live on the Navis N4 terminal operating system (TOS) at Da Chan Bay Terminal One (DCB), located in Shenzhen, China. N4 is Navis’ latest generation TOS, allowing customers the flexibility and scalability needed to run their operations - from a single terminal to multiple terminals spanning numerous geographic locations managed from one central location. Busan, Liverpool2 Ports to Enter Partnership

One of Asia’s largest port authorities has signed a landmark cooperation agreement with the company building a new container terminal at Liverpool in the heart of the U.K. Peel Ports Group and Busan Port Authority will now work together to hone technical, economical and commercial acumen and increase investment in infrastructure and environmental developments. Lim Ki-tack, president of Busan Port Authority, travelled to the U.K. to meet Mark Whitworth, CEO of Peel Ports Group, and sign the agreement November 14.

Liverpool Container Terminal Drives Technology Upgrade

The development of a £300 million container terminal in Liverpool (U.K.) is driving a major technology investment by Britain’s second largest ports group. Peel Ports is introducing the Navis N4 terminal operation system – acclaimed as the gold standard in global container management – at eight sites in the U.K. and Ireland. The upgrade is being driven by Liverpool2 – a new container hub for the U.K. and Ireland which will serve as the enabling platform from which the group will standardise and centralise its terminal operation systems.

Hyundai Wins Container Terminal Order

South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction has won a $510 million order to build a container terminal in Hong Kong. Hyundai was reportedly awarded the deal by a group of Hong Kong companies, including Modern Terminals Ltd. Work is to begin May 12 for completion by October 2004.

OPEC President and Venezuelan Energy Minister Ali Rodriguez dismissed another increase in crude oil output in July, quelling speculation that a recent price spike could pressure exporters to crank out more oil. Mexico's Energy Minister Luis Tellez, meanwhile, said the Wednesday summit of the oil trio -- the three engineers of a March 1999 producers' pact to restrict output and lift sagging prices -- would not produce any firm action. Port of Kiel Welcomes Costa Pacifica

Today marks the beginning of Kiel’s tenth season as a base port for the cruise ships of the Costa Crociere Shipping Company. It comes as “Costa Pacifica” arrives in Kiel to become the biggest cruise ship ever to berth in the port. Arriving from Harwich, the Costa flagship was met early this morning by the tug “Bülk” and escorted with a fountain display to Kiel’s Ostseekai Cruise Terminal where her captain and crew were officially welcomed by the President of the Schleswig-Holstein state capital, Cathy Kietzer.

Hext to Lead V. Ships Marine Services Division

As part of a Group re-organisation, V.Ships, the world's largest provider of ship management and related marine services, has appointed Richard Hext as Chief Executive Officer of the Groups' Marine Services Division. The move follows a restructuring of the Group into two operating divisions; Ship Management and Marine Services. The newly formed Marine Services Division will oversee all activities of the Group other than ship management, including commercial management, ship agency, consulting, travel, insurance, IT and various other support activities. Roberto Giorgi continues to head up the Ship Management Division, overseeing all cargo and leisure ship management activities within the group. Mr. Hext joins V.Ships from LevelSeas, where he was Chief Executive.

In this year’s "Global Container Terminal Operators" annual report, Drewry Maritime Research has introduced an additional ranking of terminal operators which includes SIPG, China Merchants, Modern Terminals and Ports America in the Top 10. The Drewry World Container Terminal Ownership Ranking has been derived by including all companies with equity teu of more than one million teu in 2010, regardless of whether they operate internationally or not. Kiel Port Opens New Viewing Terrace

The new panoramic viewing terrace at Kiel’s new Schwedenkai Terminal has been officially opened to visitors and the public. Dr Dirk Claus, Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG) and Peter Todeskino, Kiel Lord Mayor and head of the department of city development and environment, cut a ribbon today on the steps leading to the terrace formally inaugurating the facility. “Here in Kiel we live on and with the Fiord and we want to attract people to the water”, said Peter Todeskino.
