US Senator John Warner Visits Namesake Submarine at NNS
Huntington Ingalls Industries inform that its Newport News Shipbuilding division has hosted a visit by former U.S. Sen. John Warner and ship's sponsor Jeanne Warner today to see the steady progress being made on the Virginia-class fast attack submarine bearing his name. John Warner (SSN 785) has reached its "pressure hull complete" construction milestone, which signifies that all of the submarine's hull sections are joined to form a single, water-tight unit. John Warner will be the 12th Virginia-class submarine and is the only Virginia-class submarine to bear the name of a person.

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division has opened a new, 65,000-square-foot facility, called the Supplemental Module Outfitting Facility (SMOF), to facilitate the Virginia Class Submarine (VCS) Program's two-submarines-per-year build plan. "In 2011, Congressional approval to move forward with the two-submarines-per-year build plan was achieved," said Chris Miner, NNS' VCS Program director.

Northrop Grumman Corporation has completed work on a pier and a covered module outfitting facility to improve manufacturing efficiency. These new facilities are among several capital investments the company is making to further modernize its Newport News sector. The multi-level pier is 1,040 ft. long and is designed to support outfitting and testing for both aircraft carrier new construction and overhaul. Among its features are 28,000 sq. ft. of material staging area, raised crane rails to improve material flow to the ship deck, 300 office spaces, lunch tables and passageways for personnel and vehicles.
