EMC Unveils New Suite of Global Marine VSAT Services

EMC today announced a new global Ku-band VSAT package of connectivity and content for ships at sea, optimized for the next-generation high-throughput satellite (HTS) networks that are now being deployed. “Designed with crew welfare as a top priority, the new EMC VSAT platform offers a combination of services and capabilities never before available from a single marine VSAT supplier,” said Gilles Gillesen, president of EMC’s commercial shipping business unit. EMC’s patented SpeedNet technology solves the age-old problem of latency in web access at sea. Using a proprietary intelligent protocol and global backbone, SpeedNet predictively fetches, compresses and pushes multiple layers of websites at once to local servers.

BW Offshore Awards SatCom Contract to Orange

Provider of floating production services to the oil and gas industry, BW Offshore, says it has signed a 5-year, $12 million contract with Orange Business Services for an end-to-end satellite communication solution for its fleet of oil and gas production vessels. Orange Business Services is providing Maritime VSAT – a fully managed end-to-end satellite-based communication solution – which fully integrates BW Offshore’s 14 vessels and two land-based locations into the Orange MPLS network. This solution offers BW Offshore personnel access to the exact same business applications, communication and entertainment services at sea as on land, no matter where the vessel is located.

NY Waterway Ferries Fit Video Surveillance System

The 8 million annual passengers that travel the New York Harbor on NY Waterway ferries now do so more safely with a system that includes hundreds of Interlogix IP and analog cameras, transmitting from moving ferries to a land-based security command center via a fast-roaming wireless mesh network based on multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) by Fluidmesh Networks. NY Waterway is the nation’s largest privately owned commuter ferry company, transporting 30,000 riders a day between 22 landings and terminals along a 100-mile corridor in the Hudson and East rivers and upper New York Harbor.

Orange and Consilium Launch a Fully Electronic Platform for Maritime Navigation and Communications. Solution providers Orange Business Services and Consilium are announcing the launch of Current At Sea - a bundled, flat-rate solution that enables shipping companies to move to a fully electronic platform for navigation and communications. Current At Sea essentially extends the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDI) over the world’s largest MPLS-based communications network (both terrestrial and satellite). It can provide detailed, real-time information for charting voyages and the remote monitoring of ships at sea. Global Crossing has been providing Private IP Network Services and Network Management Services to Norskan Offshore, a Brazilian offshore services provider owned by Norwegian Group DOF, the second largest Norwegian investor in . Based in , Norskan Offshore has invested nearly $700m in the Brazilian naval industry and currently has six state-of-the-art vessels. Global Crossing's MPLS-based network connects both the shipyards and also the company's headquarters. As part of a three-year contract signed in September 2007, Global Crossing is also providing Network Management Services to Norskan Offshore in four sites in - Botafogo, Ilha do Governador, and Macae.
