Mohamed Samara, CEO of MPS Terminal 3 at Tema Port, Ghana, announced that shareholders had approved the immediate construction of Phase 2 with completion expected by end of 2020, two years earlier than initially planned.With a depth of 18 meters, the new entrance channel to the Port is one of the deepest in Africa, allowing the worlds’ biggest vessels to enter both today and in the coming years.The harbor basin provides the space to dredge deeper and build additional wharves if required. The first vessel has successfully docked at Tema Port’s new MPS Terminal 3, Ghana, said a statement from APM Terminals.The container vessel will be used for training purposes over the coming weeks, to ensure that the terminal runs smoothly from day one, when operations begin later this month on June 28.Chartering the test vessel will cost around 250,000 Dollars. Industry data shows UK export performance as a whole has been stronger outside the Single Market than within the EU over the last decade according to PwC’s UK Economic Outlook report. The Cyprus Chamber of Shipping has hailed the unanimous decision by MPs to forward for a vote the legislation that will define three new branches of the executive – shipping, tourism and development, reports Financial Mirror. The report quoted the umbrella organisation for the entire maritime sector of shipowners, managers and services saying that  the decision, following the approval by the House Finance Committee on Monday, established an “innovative institutional structure” and will substantially contribute to the further development of Cyprus shipping and the economy, in general. The three State Secretariats will operate independently of the ten-member Cabinet and will report directly to the President.

The UK Chamber of Shipping has contacted over 800 parliamentary candidates from around the country, asking them to back its campaign for enhanced support for maritime training. The proposal, called SMarT Plus, would see a doubling in government support to GBP 30 million a year. In return, many leading shipowners will increase the number of seafarers they train and guarantee them their first job. The benefits of this would be significant: British seafarers are among the most productive workers in the UK economy, contributing GBP 17,500 per year more to UK GDP than the average worker. According to the government’s own figures, the UK economy gets GBP5 back for every GBP1 invested in maritime training.

UK politicians and the general public have demonstrated overwhelmingly that they recognize shipping as the biggest mover of the nation’s imports and exports, according to a new study commissioned by the UK Chamber of Shipping. Guy Platten, CEO of the UK Chamber of Shipping, said of the study: “The findings confirm that we can forget about so-called ‘seablindness’ – it just does not exist. Leading pollster Comres surveyed 2,026 members of the British public and 127 UK MPs during the first four months of this year. The 8,600 TEU capacity CSAV Traiguen became the largest container ship to call a Guatemalan port when it arrived at Terminal de Contenedores Quetzal (TCQ) on Guatemala’s Pacific Coast on April 12th, 2017, on the maiden call of German-based Hapag-Lloyd’s Mediterranean Pacific (MPS) service. U.K. shipbuilder Cammell Laird held one of the largest ceremonies in its history when Sir David Attenborough joined more than 1,000 people for the keel laying of the new £150 million polar research vessel. Construction was officially started by the world-renowned naturalist and broadcaster, after whom the ship is named, at the ceremonial event at Cammell Laird’s famous Birkenhead site in Liverpool City Region. Sir David started the keel laying process by initiating the lifting by crane of the first hull unit on to the construction berth.

Ghana President John Dramani Mahama has launched the start of major expansion works at the Tema Port, near Accra, according to local reports. This ambitious project involves an upgrade and significant expansion of Ghana’s main seaport. The project is a Public Private Partnership between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), representing the Ghana Government and Meridian Ports Services (MPS). The Port Of Tema Is the largest port in Ghana. Situated on the eastern coast of the country it stretches over a 3.9 million square metres of land area. The port receives an average of over 1650 vessel calls per year. These comprise container vessels, general cargo vessels, tankers, Ro-Ro and cruise vessels amongst many others.
