USS MOMSEN Crew Trains at MSI Newport

Lt. Jeff Brooks, Training Officer of Pre Commissioning Unit MOMSEN, had the PCU Bridge Watch Standers attend USCG-approved Automatic Radar Plotting Aids (ARPA) and Electronic Chart Display Information Systems (ECDIS) courses at MarineSafety International's Newport Simulator Training Complex (MSI-Newport) this past August. Those successfully completing the courses will receive certificates that are recognized by the USCG as applicable to merchant marine licenses and STCW 95 endorsements.

Seaway Marine Transport Trains at MSI Newport

A group of four students from Seaway Marine Transport (SMT) completed an Emergency Shiphandling course on 18 February at MSI Newport. This course examines the theory and practice of ship handling. It includes an abundance of simulator time for attempting and mastering various maneuvers. The course is especially designed and recommended for Chief Mates who will soon sail as Master. Subject matter includes the proper relationship between engines and helm for ship maneuvering; and, the effects on ship behavior caused by wind, current, shallow water, banks, narrow channels and conditions of loading. Everything is reinforced by practical application exercises performed on the bridge and bridge wing simulators.

MSI Newport Appoints New Director

Effective February 15th, Captain Fred Bronaugh, USN (Ret.) will become the new director of MSI's Newport, RI Simulator / Training Complex. Captain Bronaugh replaces Captain Frank Julian, USN (Ret.) who is retiring after 14 years of service with MSI. Captain Bronaugh has a BA in Economics and a MS in Management. During his tenure in the Navy, he attended the U.S. Naval War College. He has significant at-sea experience having been Commanding Officer of three ships. He also has experience as a Prospective Commanding Officer (PCO) Instructor at the Surface Warfare Officers’ School (SWOS), Newport, RI and served on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Technical Training.

Brisbane Marine Pilots Train at MSI-Newport

Stephen Cummings and David Harris of the Brisbane Marine Pilots attended an Emergency Shiphandling course conducted September 13-17, 2004, at MarineSafety International's simulator training complex in Newport, RI. Topics covered included ship maneuvering in narrow channels and docking operations in tight quarters under difficult circumstances of wind and current. The pilots were also able to practice procedures for employing escort tugs using a computer model of the port of Brisbane, Australia. A new passenger terminal is being constructed in Brisbane, so procedures were developed and practiced for escorting and docking passengers ships.

McAllister Trains at MSI Newport

McAllister Docking Pilots and Tug Operators attended a two-day Tractor Tug Operations training course October 8-9, 2004 at MSI's Newport Simulator Center. The class focused on the capabilities and limitations of Azimuthing Stern Drive Tugs and Voith-Schneider Propulsion. The training was split between classroom and simulator time; interactive simulators were used to reinforce the learning points. The principle instructor for the course was Captain Vic Schisler, an active Jacobsen Pilot from Long Beach, California.

Shiphandling/Tractor Tug Operations Training

From October 2-5, MSI Newport conducted the first of three Shiphandling/Tractor Tug Operation courses for Masters, Pilots and Tug Masters at the Marathon Oil LNG Terminal in Equatorial Guinea. This training follows a research project in which MSI used real-time, full mission simulation to examine the terminal layout, mooring procedures, and required tug power. In attendance were 2 LNG Masters from Cerres Shipping, 3 Tug Masters from SMIT and 2 Pilots from Marathon Oil. Additionally, other members of the Marathon Oil and SMIT team were in attendance with a representative of British Gas. Training including scenarios involving emergencies in docking and undocking LNG carriers at the new Marathon Oil terminal.

Trinidad Pilots Train at MSI

During the period 24-27 July MSI Newport conducted Shiphandling training for three Trinidad Pilots for the Point Fortin LNG Terminal. Captain Bill Mackay was the Instructor/Facilitator. This course uses a data base model of the Point Fortin LNG Terminal created by MSI, and is designed to hone the pilots skill in bringing various sizes of LNG carriers into Point Fortin and alongside the LNG Terminal there. The course places the pilots in difficult environmental and emergency situations. This program was tailored to specific company operations and objectives. Seaway Pilots Train at MSI Newport

Saint Lawrence Seaway Pilots completed a High Speed Craft Bridge Resource Management course on Jan. 20 at MarineSafety's Newport Center. The course included a detailed review of high speed operations, including the subjects of wake effects, evacuation requirements, watchstanding requirements, ARPA optimization, and vulnerabilities of HSC design. The course was facilitated and instructed by Captain Fred Bronaugh, MSI Newport Business Development Director, Captain Grant Parker, consulting instructor from Kingston Marine , and Captain Ed Lynch, MSI Newport Director.

MarineSafety Provides Training For LNG Carriers

MarineSafety International (MSI) provided simulator-based training for ships' officers, pilots, tug masters, and docking masters maneuvering LNG carriers in the Savannah River. MSI prepared a precision geographic/bathymetric/visual database of the operating area and generated response models for specified classes of LNG tankers. The three-day training courses included the employment of tractor tugs escorting LNG ships in addition to docking and undocking the vessels under various environmental conditions. The training courses, which began this summer, were developed and conducted at MSI's Newport, Rhode Island facility.
