As the world moves increasingly toward cleaner, efficient and more environmentally benign power sources, news from Germany today sees the high-profile MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH forming a development partnership with Darmstadt-based AKASOL GmbH, a subsidiary of Schulz Group (Tettnang) and one of the leading manufacturers of Li-ion battery systems for high performance applications. The partnership is aimed to develop and deliver battery systems for MTU’s hybrid and e-drive propulsion systems for marine, rail and industrial applications.

MTU Series 4000 Engines ABS NVR Certified

As the first engines in its power class the MTU Series 4000 was recently awarded Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The new ABS NVR certification, a requirement for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Fast Response Cutter (FRC) program, was awarded after 1,500 hours of testing of the 20V 4000 M73 that included extensive run times at 110% of the engine’s rated power in a variety of extreme environmental conditions. Tognum Now under Rolls-Royce Power Systems Name

Effective immediately, the former Tognum AG will now operate under the name of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG.

Effective immediately, the former Tognum AG will now operate under the name of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. Since March 2013, the specialist for large engines, propulsion systems and distributed energy systems has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rolls-Royce plc and Daimler AG, each of which has a 50% shareholding in the company via a joint venture. The group of companies with MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH as the core company has been consolidated in the Rolls-Royce Group’s results since the beginning of 2013.

Tognum America changes name to MTU America Inc.

Name change aligns corporate name with primary product brands MTU and MTU Onsite Energy; German holding company Tognum AG renamed Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG. Effective immediately, Tognum America Inc. has changed its name to MTU America Inc. Based in Novi, Mich., the company is responsible for the manufacture, development, sales and service of MTU engines, propulsion and drive systems and MTU Onsite Energy distributed energy systems in North and Latin America. The company also maintains manufacturing facilities in Aiken, S.C. and Mankato, Minn.

MTU Diesel Gensets for Type 26 British Combat Ship

Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH and Rolls-Royce have jointly been awarded the contract to design the diesel generator sets for the Royal Navy´s future Type 26 Global Combat Ship. BAE Systems made the announcement at the International Defense and Security Equipment exhibition (DSEi) in London. The propulsion system will consist of a combination of four MTU diesel gensets powered by Type 20V 4000 M53B engines, and a Rolls-Royce Type MT30 gas turbine. Combined propulsion systems utilizing diesel engines and gas turbines are increasingly gaining in significance in the naval sector. The future Type 26 Global Combat Ship will employ a CODLOG (Combined Diesel Electric or Gas Turbine) configuration.

First Torsional Vibration Symposium: May 21-23, 2014

Filling a perceived gap in the global calendar of technical gatherings in the power transmission sector, the first Torsional Vibration Symposium will be held from May 21-23, 2014 in Salzburg, Austria. The goal of the Symposium is to stage a unique event for experts involved with the subject matter from all over the world and from any affected branch of industry. MTU Boosts Series 8000 Engine Power

Series 8000 marine diesel  engines from Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH now available with an output of 10MW. Previously, the 20-cylinder engine had a maximum output of 9,100kW. The IMO Tier II-compliant unit demonstrated its increased power and reliability during a project-specific endurance run over 1,500 hours under tropical conditions. The Series 8000 engines now cover a power range from 7,200kW to 10,000kW enabling MTU to offer economically efficient, diesel-based propulsion solutions producing up to 40MW per vessel.

MTU & Marina Barcelona 92 Sign Megayacht Agreement

MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH & Spanish repair shipyard Marina Barcelona 92 (MB92) agree cooperation on work and refit of MTU  yacht engines. The agreement establishes technical and commercial relationships between both parties to carry out service work and refit on MTU engines installed in yachts visiting MB92. To this end Tognum Group subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen has established an office directly within the shipyard. MB92 is located in the port of Barcelona and is one of the largest shipyards worldwide for the refit, service work and maintenance of super and mega yachts.

Tognum to Reduce Size of Executive Board

In January 2011, the first step taken by Tognum to establish a new global sales organisation came into force. The new organization is designed to improve the service and support provided for the company’s existing customers and above all to acquire new customers worldwide for its broadly diversified product portfolio. Peter Kneipp (53) joined MTU Friedrichshafen in 1989 as a project manager for marine propulsion systems. At an early stage in his career, Peter Kneipp was involved in projects that enabled him to acquire experience in the Asia-Pacific region, where he has worked since 1997 until the end of 2010. He initially spent several years in Singapore, where he was mainly involved in customer service and after sales.

Heuer to Take Helm at MTU

Dr. Rolf A. Hanssen, after more than 10 years as CEO of MTU and Head of the DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway Business Unit, will terminate his contract as planned with effect from December 31, 2004. Vericor Power Systems Signs Agreement With MTU Friedrichshafen

Vericor Power Systems announced it has signed an agreement with MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH (MTU), whereby MTU will package and distribute Vericor’s TF™40 and TF™50 aeroderivative marine gas turbines. The Vericor/MTU-F distribution agreement will greatly supplement Vericor’s direct marketing activities for the TF series gas turbines to worldwide marine customers. The TF40 is rated at 4,000 shaft horsepower (shp)/2,983kilowatts (kW) and the TF50 provides 5,100 shp/3,803 kW. Both engines can be incorporated into a variety of flexible propulsion system arrangements. For example, the compact TF marine gas turbines can be used for stand alone power plants or combined with diesels to form COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG)…

MTU Detroit Diesel Formed

MTU Friedrichshafen (Germany) and Detroit Diesel Corporation (USA) announced the formation of a new division for Off-Highway engine activities, MTU Detroit Diesel. The group will continue to be headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. MTU Detroit Diesel will be a separate division of Detroit Diesel Corporation and will be an integral part of DaimlerChrysler Off-Highway. MTU Detroit Diesel will have responsibility for the application engineering, manufacturing, sale and service for off-highway engine products in marine, construction, industrial, power generation, petroleum and defense markets in the United States, Canada and Mexico. MTU Detroit Diesel was formed through a longstanding partnership between MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH and Detroit Diesel Corporation dating back to 1994.

GE Marine Turbine to Power Turkish Navy Corvette

GE Marine will supply MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH, Friedrichshafen, Germany, with one LM2500 gas turbine. MTU will incorporate the LM2500 into a COmbined Diesel And Gas turbine (CODAG) configuration to power the Turkish Navy’s new MILGEM multi-purpose corvette. The new MILGEM corvette will have an overall length of 99 meters with a displacement of 2,000 tons. The corvette’s CODAG system will feature one LM2500 gas turbine and two MTU diesel engines for total propulsion power of 30,000 kilowatts. Maximum ship speed will be 29 knots. The gas turbine will be manufactured at GE’s Evendale, Ohio facility, and will be delivered to MTU Friedrichshafen in late 2007 for integration into the CODAG propulsion system.
