Released to selected trial customers earlier this year, the next generation software for Kongsberg Maritime’s GeoSwath Plus shallow water multibeam echo sounder has already been put through its paces on the river Douro in Northern Portugal by one of the country’s survey companies, Lagoa do Ruivo Survey (LRS). The new GS4 all-in-one survey package is a completely reworked version of the GS+ software, providing higher performance and a contemporary look and feel. The software is now available to all GeoSwath Plus users.

The new RV Kronprins Haakon, the first Norwegian Icebreaker built for Polar research, and the first purpose built polar research vessel since Roald Amundsen’s Maud launched in 1917, will start regular science cruises in 2017 with a complete hydroacoustic systems package from Kongsberg Maritime. Builder Fincantieri has selected a combined delivery of Kongsberg Maritime survey technology, including a wide range of Simrad scientific research systems for the Kronprins Haakon. Kongsberg Maritime will introduce the new EM 2040 Compact, a sophisticated multibeam echo sounder for high resolution mapping and inspection applications, during Ocean Business 2013. Based on the EM 2040 multibeam, the EM 2040C is a development in acoustic technology that makes detailed surveys of shallow water possible using small boats and launches. M/V Fugro Equator is the third of Fugro’s FSSV65 series of dedicated survey vessels. Designed to Fugro specifications to be fuel efficient and acoustically quiet, the vessel is fitted with the latest survey equipment, making her the most advanced vessel of its type in Asia. The new vessel is permanently equipped with hydrographic, analogue and digital geophysical survey spreads, including multibeam systems and she has been designed with AUV operation as a major consideration.

A WASSP Multibeam Sonar is being used by hydrographic surveyors at the grounding of the 236m-cargo vessel MV Rena on the Astrolabe Reef off the coast of New Zealand, to locate lost containers. Marine electronics manufacturer WASSP Ltd, a world leader in multibeam sonar technology has provided one of their WASSP sonar systems for the salvage effort. Within 48 hours of the WASSP arriving in Tauranga, it had been used to identify 12 targets, 7 of which were submerged containers…
