Tanker Helps Rescue Overdue Boaters off US East Coast

A Hong Kong registered tanker assisted in the rescue of two men adrift in a sailboat off the U.S. East Coast.On Sunday, watchstanders at the U.S. Coast Guard Fifth District command center were notified of an overdue sailing vessel, Atrevida II, which was sailing from Cape May, N.J. to Marathon, Fla. The two men aboard, 65-year-old Kevin Hyde and 76-year-old Joe Ditomasso, were last in contact with family and friends on December 3, when they departed Oregon Inlet, N.C. The Coast Guard began urgent marine information broadcasts and direct communication with commercial vessels in the area in an attempt to locate the Atrevida II. A search effort was launched, involving multiple Coast Guard aircraft and cutters, vessels from the U.S.

Aerial Drones Monitor Ship Emissions in the Strait of Gibraltar

Eleventh National Security Cutter Named Elizebeth Smith Friedman

The U.S. Coast Guard is naming the 11th Legend-Class National Security Cutter (NSC) in honor of Elizebeth Smith Friedman.Friedman was a pioneering code-breaker for the Coast Guard during the Prohibition Era and World War II, serving within the Coast Guard Cryptanalytic Unit-387. She has been dubbed "America's first female cryptanalyst" and in many ways could be considered the founder of the modern-day Coast Guard Intelligence Program.Her work with the Coast Guard began soon after the passage of the Volstead Act, which prohibited the manufacture, sale, or trade of alcohol in the United States.

Likely Distress Hoax Call: Coastguard Seek Information

The Coast Guard is investigating a possible hoax call after multiple Coast Guard assets and partner agencies responded to a distress call that was made via VHF-FM channel 16, Sunday at approximately 2:45 a.m. near Beaufort, N.C. As part of this investigation, the Coast Guard is seeking the public’s assistance to identify the caller or provide additional information. Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders received a mayday call Sunday via VHF- Channel 16.

Inside Look at the USCG Response to the Golden Sea

Fierce Arctic winds and towering 30-foot seas assaulted a 738-foot freighter with 20 crewmembers aboard finding themselves helplessly adrift with limited engine power in the midst of an ice-cold storm 70 miles north of Adak. Trouble loomed on the horizon as they were drifting toward land carrying more than 132,277 pounds of rape seed used to make canola oil, 450,000 gallons of fuel oil and 11,700 gallons of diesel fuel with the only help more than 400 miles away. In the midst of the Golden Seas’ voyage to the United Arab Emirates the crew experienced a turbo-charger failure Dec. 3 2010.

Coast Guard Benefits from Houston Company

In an ongoing effort to develop the fastest and most efficient response to emergency situations, the United States Coast Guard contracts with Houston-based Advanced Web Site Publishing (AWSP) to establish a technological birds eye view of performance during an emergency response situation - establishing a first of its kind interactive, online response Flash movie. This newly developed “flash movie,” accessible from the US Coast Guard Website, incorporates pages of Hurricane Katrina path charting, time lines, and the movement of multiple Coast Guard helicopters dispatched from stations across the United States during the disaster in an interactive overview – complete with pause and replay features.

Cianbro to Convert Tankers into Supply Ships

Cianbro Corp. has been awarded a contract to convert two 370-foot sulfur tankers into multipurpose supply vessels for the offshore oil industry. Cianbro said its agreement with Hornbeck Offshore Services of Covington, La., will provide more than 300 jobs on the Portland waterfront and at Bath Iron Works, the primary subcontractor on the project. Cianbro said it is scheduled to receive the first ship later this month, with work on both vessels expected to continue through next year. Terms of the deal are not being divulged. When completed, it is believed that the two U.S.-flagged vessels will be the largest offshore supply ships in the world, according to the Pittsfield-based construction company's announcement, which did not include the dollar value of the contract.
