Adriatic Ports Receive Boost from EU

The Adriatic ports of Venice, Trieste, Ravenna, Ancona and Monfalcone in Italy and the port of Koper in Slovenia will collaborate in producing a study which will be co-financed by the EU with €1 million from the TEN-T Multi-Annual Call, to create an integrated multi-port gateway capable of improving cargo interoperability and fostering co-modality. The study is focused on the development of a multimodal and multiport gateway, connecting the Adriatic ports to mainland logistic platforms in their respective countries, as well as supporting the development of strategic links by sea between the Mediterranean and Black Sea areas, based in particular on MoS corridors.

Hull Blyth’s Loss

Norman Shaw, managing director of Hull Blyth (Nigeria) Ltd, sadly passed away in December 2001, in Lagos, Nigeria, aged 49. Norman Shaw had extensive experience in the shipping industry working in the UK, USA, Singapore, The Netherlands and West Africa between 1976 and 1998. He was then appointed manager of P&O Nigeria before joining Hull Blyth (Nigeria) Ltd in 1999. Hull Blyth & Co Ltd is the Multiport member serving Angola, Ghana and Nigeria. Norman is survived by his wife and two sons, who would like to thank everyone who attended the funeral service in Southampton or the memorial service in Lagos.

OCSCL Secures Port Contract

Multiport member Oriental Commercial & Shipping Co Ltd. (OCSCL) has won a ten-year contract to operate the passenger terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, Saudi Arabia. The contract includes all operational activities including the transportation of passengers to and from vessels. OCSCL serves the Saudi ports of Jeddah, Dammam, Dhuba, Gizan, Jubail, Rabigh, Ras Tanura, Riyadh and Yanbu. Its areas of expertise include ship agency, inspections and surveys, crew changes and repatriation, and ship chandlery. BOGSOA Elects New Chairman

Sayeed H. Chowdhury, chairman and ceo of HRC Shipping Ltd (HRC Group), the Multiport member in Bangladesh, has been elected chairman of the Bangladesh Oceangoing Ship Owners' Association (BOGSOA). Elected at the association's annual general meeting at the end of June, Chowdhury will hold the position for a two-year term. Also a member of the British Institute of Management, Chowdhury founded the HRC Group in 1991. Although initially set up as a ship agency, it is now a diversified conglomerate of sixteen companies including ship agency, chartering, shipowning and distribution. With offices in Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna, HRC Shipping Ltd is the largest private sector shipowning company in Bangladesh.

Luard Joins Martin, Ottaway, Van Hemmen & Dolan

John F. Luard has joined the firm of Martin, Ottaway, van Hemmen & Dolan, Inc., as a consultant. Luard was the owner of Luard & Company until 1998 and is an experienced cargo surveyor and consultants on the east coast. From the New Jersey office, Luard will provide worldwide cargo consulting and surveying services. After serving as a Deck Officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine, Luard joined his father’s firm in 1971, which he built into a multiport organization over the next 27 years. During that period he provided consulting services to all the major underwriters and shipowners and has provided assistance on some of the largest and most complex cargo claims.

Hamburg Hosts Multiport General Meeting

The Multiport Ship Agencies Network held its autumn General Meeting in Hamburg this week, concluding with a well attended cocktail reception in the Atlantic Hotel for over 200 members of the Hamburg shipping community on Tuesday evening, 15th October. Peter Titchener, Secretary-General, said, "We are very proud to be back in Hamburg, one of the major centres of world shipping. We are here not only to thank everyone for supporting our member agents, but to explain how we can add value to the services we offer."
