The National Coast Guard Museum Association, Inc. presented the 2016 Alexander Hamilton Award to Coast Guard veteran and founder of J.D. Power and Associates, Inc., J. David Power III, who served as an officer aboard the Coast Guard icebreaker EASTWIND during the mid-1950s. Power was honored in recognition of his years of outstanding service in support of the National Coast Guard Museum. Powers has spent almost 50 years as a pioneer in studying consumer opinions, with 40 years as founder of what has become one of the most prestigious marketing information companies in the world, J.D.

Eastern Shipbuilding has donated $250,000 for the construction of the National Coast Guard Museum in New London, Connecticut, the National Coast Guard Museum Association announced yesterday. Eastern Shipbuilding, a diversified ship builder headquartered in Panama City, Florida, made the donation to the National Coast Guard Museum Association, which is currently engaged in a nationwide fundraising campaign to build a museum to honor the men and women of the U.S. Coast guard. The Coast Guard is currently the only branch of the U.S. military without a dedicated museum.

With Coast Guard Cutter Eagle dressed overall as a backdrop, notables including Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp, broke the ground for construction of the future National Coast Guard Museum. Connecticut Rep. Joe Courtney, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Sen. Chris Murphy, City of New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio, Vice President of Cross Sound Ferry Adam Wronowski, Connecticut Gov. Daniel Malloy and Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp dip their shovels into the soil, signifying the beginning of what will be a tremendous physical transformation to the New London waterfront area, where the future National Coast Guard Museum will be built (See photograph).

Adm. Bob Papp was present as City of New London, Conn., and the National Coast Guard Museum Association unveiled the plans and location of the museum. As the oldest U.S. maritime service, and the only U.S. military service without a national museum, the National Coast Guard Museum will afford the public an opportunity to learn about the rich and noteworthy achievements of the men and women who forged the service’s history of the past 223 years. The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced that, at a joint meeting of the Executive Committees of the National Coast Guard Museum Association and the Coast Guard Foundation, it was voted to postpone work on developing a National Coast Guard Museum. The project was launched last year to honor the efforts of our guardians of the shores, and celebrate the over one million individuals saved by the Coast Guard—the only branch of the military that does not have a museum. “The reality of today’s economic climate makes a project which is so dependant on private philanthropy very difficult at this time,” said Ross Roeder, chairman of the board, Coast Guard Foundation.

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, and a partner of the National Coast Guard Museum Association, announced the appointment of Jerry Ostermiller as the president of the National Coast Guard Museum. An accomplished museum administrator with over 25 years experience, Mr. Ostermiller will establish museum programming, develop internal infrastructure and lead capital campaign fund raising efforts for the construction of the country's newest national museum in New London, Connecticut. The United States Coast Guard is the only military service that does not currently have a national museum, which recounts the institution's history, service and missions. Mr.

After more than 38 years of service, C. Bradley Mulholland will retire, effective January 1, 2004, from both Matson Navigation Company, Inc., which he serves as vice chairman of the board. He also will retire from his position as executive vice president of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., Matson’s parent company, and from director positions on the boards of both companies. Mulholland joined Matson in 1965 and served in a variety of increasingly responsible positions throughout the company, ultimately being named president and chief operating officer of Matson in 1990, and then president and chief executive officer in 1992. He became vice-chairman of the board in 2002.

USS Pampanito, visited by more than 250,000 people annually at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf, was placed in drydock at Bay Ship & Yacht Co., in Alameda, Calif., earlier this year for barnacle scraping, hull painting and other projects, including repairs to the torpedo tubes. Towing services to Bay Ship & Yacht Co. were donated by SeaRiver Maritime, Inc. While in drydock, the submarine's underwater hull was inspected, cleaned and painted, and all 38 zincs ("sacrificial" nodes to protect against electrolysis) were replaced. Additionally, Bay Ship & Yacht donated its services to paint the boat's superstructure. At a cost of $250,000, this drydocking is the most extensive overall refurbishment of the submarine since its original restoration, more than 20 years ago.
