Canada Commits $51.9 Mln to Ferry Services
The Canadian Government has committed $51.9 million to support Atlantic Canada ferry services, announced Canada’s Transport Minister Marc Garneau. The funding, announced as part of Budget 2016, will support operations, maintain and repair ferry assets and dispose of the MV Princess of Acadia, which was taken out of service in July 2015 and replaced by the MV Fundy Rose. Philippine Ferry Sinks
More than 700 people are reported missing after a Philippine ferry capsized in a typhoon on Sunday. Reuters reported that so far, only four people are known to have survived the ferry disaster. Many passengers did not make it off the MV Princess of Stars in time. Princess of Stars ran aground on but the coast guard was unable to reach it because of huge swells and bad weather caused by Typhoon Fengshen, which crashed into the central on Friday. Four people have been confirmed dead but most of the 620-plus passengers and 121 crew remain missing. Children's slippers and life jackets have washed ashore. At least two other coast guard vessels were en route to help in rescue efforts and divers would be able to scour the submerged ship.
Marina Orders All Sulpicio Ships Grounded
The Cebu Daily News reported that all Sulpicio Lines vessels nationwide were ordered grounded by the Maritime Authority (Marina) following the sinking of the MV Princess of the Stars. A memorandum was issued by Administrator Vicente Sauso for personnel to inspect all Sulpicio Lines vessels to check whether they have lashing gears and have complied with cargo securing manuals. Excel Maritime Agrees to Acquire MV Fiona Bulker
Excel Maritime Carriers Ltd a shipping company specializing in the seaborne transportation of dry bulk cargoes such as iron ore, coal and grains, announced that it agreed in late February 2005 to acquire a Handymax bulk carrier, MV Fiona Bulker, for a purchase price of $25.6 million. MV Fiona Bulker (to be renamed "MV Princess I") is a Handymax bulk carrier of approximately 38,800 dwt, built in 1994 by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries. The vessel is expected to be delivered by late May 2005. MV Fiona Bulker is the ninth vessel that the Company has agreed to acquire since Christopher Georgakis joined Excel Maritime as CEO in late October 2004.
