First Ships Dock at Kenya's Lamu Deep Water Port

The first ships docked at Kenya's deep water Lamu Port on Thursday as the country looks to open a new transport corridor linking its vast northern region and neighboring nations to the sea.Kenyan officials hope that the Indian Ocean port, the country's second deep water facility, will attract cargo destined for neighboring landlocked nations Ethiopia and South Sudan, and offer transhipment services where large vessels bring in cargo for onward distribution by smaller ships.The Lamu Port…

Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks

A new international convention on wreck removal has been adopted in Kenya. and property at sea, as well as the marine environment. President of Kenya, the Honourable Mwai Kibaki. territorial sea. including their territorial sea. coastal States and shipping in general have, if anything, become more acute. involved in the marking and removal of hazardous wrecks. attempts to resolve all of these and other, related, issues.

Maritime Rescue, Piracy Top Agenda

The commissioning of a regional maritime rescue co-ordination centre as well as meetings with the Presidents of both Kenya and Tanzania were among highlights of a recent mission to Africa by IMO Secretary-General Efthimios E. Mitropoulos. Mr. Mitropoulos began a busy three days (3 to 6 May) of meetings with a visit to the President of Kenya, His Excellency Mr. Mwai Kibaki in the capital, Nairobi. Th e two discussed matters of mutual interest, in particular arrangements for the diplomatic conference to adopt a new international convention on wreck removal which Kenya is to host on IMO’s behalf next year. Mr. Mitropoulos then travelled to Mombasa, where he first visited the Mission to Seafarers.
