Eighth 24,188 TEU Ship Joins OOCL's Fleet

Hong Kong based ocean carrier Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) announced it has taken delivery of its eighth 24,188 TEU containership, OOCL Abu Dhabi.The vessel is the fourth in a series of six 24,188 TEU newbuilds to be delivered to OOCL by the Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (DACKS) shipyard in China. The ultra large containership is 400 meters long and 61.3 meters wide.OOCL Abu Dhabi was officially named during a ceremony at the shipyard on February 25.

ClassNK Grants First CybR-G Notation for Cyber Secure Ship Design

Classification society ClassNK said it has granted Cyber Resilience-Guideline (CybR-G) notation to Tateshina, a new oil tanker built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd.(NACKS) for NYK Line. CybR-G notation represents that the ship design has incorporated cyber security measures in accordance with ClassNK’s “Guidelines for Designing Cyber Security Onboard Ships”, and that it is feasible for ship operation considering cyber security.ClassNK has released “Guidelines for Designing Cyber Security Onboard Ships” by compiling best practices for newbuilding designs of shipyards and shipowners, from the view of identifying computer systems to be protected from cyber attacks, and building a network to safeguard them.

NYK VLCC Tateshina Designed to Be 23% More Energy Efficient

The very large crude oil carrier (VLCC) Tateshina, owned by NYK, was delivered on November 8, 2021, built at Nantong COSCO KHI Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS) in China.According to the owner, several enhancements have been incorporated on Tateshina to help improve performance and fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, including a modified bow shape to help reduce wave resistance. This ship is also equipped low-friction paint, high-efficiency large-diameter propellers, and ladder fins that regulate the water flow at the stern and reduce energy loss.

Oldendorff Orders Two Ultramax Bulk Carriers

German shipowner Oldendorff Carriers revealed on Tuesday that earlier this year it ordered two 61,300 dwt Ultramax newbuilds from Dalian Cosco Kawasaki Ship Engineering Co Ltd (DACKS) for delivery July 2022.The 61,300 Ultramaxes are of the Kawasaki eco design, of which Oldendorff had previously built nine units at DACKS and sister yard NACKS until 2019. Norden Orders Two More Bulk Carriers at NACKS

Norden announced Tuesday it has added two bulk carriers to an existing newbuilding contract with shipbuilder Nantong Cosco Khi Ship Engineering Co. (NACKS), taking the total order to six vessels.The Danish shipowner said it has already sold two of the six vessels on sale and lease back terms, freeing up liquidity. The newbuilds are scheduled to be delivered from 2022.In addition, Norden said it bought a secondhand 2014 built Supramax bulk carrier scheduled to join its fleet in September.

Oldendorff Presses on With Its Newbuild Program

German shipowner Oldendorff Carriers says it has recently taken delivery of two new bulk carriers, continuing a string of newbuild deliveries from Chinese and Japanese shipyards.The 63,000 tdw Ultramax Britta Oldendorff and 100,000 tdw Post-panamax Diane Oldendorff, both built by Japanese yard Oshima Shipbuilding and handed over during the second quarter of 2020, are among 23 bulk carrier delivered to Oldendorff since early 2019. Norden Orders Four Ultramax Bulkers

Danish shipping company Norden announced Monday it has ordered four 61,000 dwt Ultramax bulk carriers from Nantong Cosco Khi Ship Engineering Co. Kawasaki Delivers Newbuild Market Cooper

Japanese shipbuilder Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has delivered the bulk carrier Market Cooper to an unnamed shipowner.The 61,000DWT vessel was built jointly by Kawasaki and China COSCO Shipping Corporation at Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS) which is located in Nantong City, China.Market Cooper has a flush deck with a forecastle and five holds that are designed for optimum transport of grains, coal, ores and steel products, said the company.Four 30-ton deck cranes are installed along the center in between the hatch covers to enable cargo loading and unloading in ports that lack cargo handling facilities.The vessel employs various technologies to achieve maximum fuel economy…

KHI Delivers Bulk Carrier Gramos

Japanese public multinational corporation Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI) has delivered a 61,000 dwt bulk carrier newbuild, Gramos, to Gramos Navigation, in China.The delivery of the Ultramax took place at the Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS) on October 29, 2019, said a release from KHI.NAKCS is located in Nantong City, China and operated jointly by China COSCO Shipping and KHI.The vessel incorporates various energy saving technologies, which reduce both fuel consumption and emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), thereby complying with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 2 requirements, said the shipbuilder.The Barbados-flagged bulker has a length of 199.9 meters and a width of 32.24 meters.

Kawasaki Heavy to Build Ship in China

VLCC Tedorigawa Delivered to K Line

Japanese shipping major Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) took delivery of its newest very large crude carrier (VLCC), Tedorigawa.The 311,000 dwt vessel was built at Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS), China and delivered on June 4, 2018.The Panama-flagged, 161,483 gross tons tanker has a length of 339.5 meters and a beam of 60 meters.According to K Line, Tedorigawa achieves low fuel consumption (about 20 percent reduction compared with conventional VLCC) by removing the bulbus bow, applying ultra-long stroke slow speed main diesel engine and highly efficient large diameter propeller. First Containership Receives LR Cyber Notation

The newly built containership MV COSCO Shipping Aries, recently delivered to COSCO Shipping Lines, is the first ever containership to receive Lloyd’s Register’s (LR) cyber-enabled ship (CES) descriptive note “Cyber AL3 SECURE PERFORM” for its energy management system. Japan’s KHI Moves Merchant Ship Construction to China

Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) diverts more shipbuilding work to its joint-venture yards in China, local media says. According to a report in Nikkei, KHI will step up commercial shipbuilding in China and scale down production in Japan to improve cost competitiveness as the market rebounds from a yearslong slump. The Japanese firm plans a 50% capacity boost at a shipyard in Dalian, Liaoning Province, that builds mainly large ships, including tankers and bulk carriers. The facility is jointly operated with China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co., also known as Cosco. More than 20 billion yen ($176 million) will be invested at the site, including construction of a second dock about 550 meters long.

K-Line Adds 311,000 DWT-Type VLCC “Kisogawa”

Japan’s shipping major Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K-Line) has expanded its fleet as it took delivery of the 311,000 dwt very large crude carrier (VLCC) Kisogawa on November 15. Kisogawa, which was constructed by China’s Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS), features a length of 339 meters and a beam of 60 meters. "The vessel achieves low fuel consumption (about 20% reduction compared with our conventional VLCC) by removing Bulbus Bow, applying ultra-long stroke slow speed main diesel engine and highly-efficient large diameter propeller," said a press release. A ballast water management system ensures ocean habitat is protected from unwanted environmental effects, it added.

Great Ships of 2016: M/V Auto Eco

Since it started publishing in 1939, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has recognized excellence in ship construction. United European Car Carriers (UECC), which is jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, held a naming ceremony for the M/V Auto Eco, a s historic ship in that it is the first of two dual fuel LNG PCTCs with 1A Super Finnish/Swedish ice class. The world’s first dual fuel LNG PCTC M/V Auto Eco had her formal naming ceremony at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium on November 21, 2016.

CMES Orders Six VLCCs at Dalian Shipbuilding

China Merchants Energy Shipping Co Ltd (CMES)  has firmed up orders to build six very large crude carriers (VLCCs) at Dalian Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corp for $522 million, reports Reuters. The deliveries of 308,000dwt VLCCs are scheduled between August 2018 and October 2019. Order for six more VLCCs brings Chinese tanker operator’s total orders to ten. A week ago, CMES has placed an order for four newbuilding VLCCs, with two each at Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering (Nacks) and Dalian Cosco KHI Ship Engineering (Dacks). The four orders are part of a 10-VLCC newbuild plan which was announced early last week. The eco-friendly VLCCs will be operated by China VLCC, a joint venture of CMES and Sinotrans & CSC Group.

World’s First LNG-fueled PCTC Delivered

United European Car Carriers (UECC), which is equally owned by NYK and Wallenius Lines, took delivery of the world’s first LNG-fueled  Pure Car and Truck Carrier  from Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. on September 29 at the NACKS shipyard in Nantong, China. The vessel  will be named “Auto Eco” when reaching North Europe towards the end of November, and it is the first of two sister vessels to be delivered. These new, unique vessels are equipped with dual-fuel engines that can use either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or heavy fuel oil and marine gas oil. These vessels will be put into service in Europe, where strict sulphur emission regulations have been introduced.

Eagle Bulk Snaps 6-year Order Drought

U.S. based ship owner and operator Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc. has bought its first vessel in more than six years, acquiring a 2016-built dry bulk vessel constructed in China at Nantong COSCO Kawasaki Heavy Industries Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS), the shipper said in a statement. The new ship, a 61,000 deadweight NACKS-61 Ultramax vessel, will be the largest in Eagle Bulk’s fleet of more than 40 vessels. It will be renamed the M/V Stamford Eagle and is scheduled for a November 2016 delivery.  The order is Eagle Bulk’s first in more than six years and “reflects management's renewed commitment to invest in a high-quality fleet renewal and growth strategy within the Supramax/Ultramax segment,” according to the shipper.

Eagle Bulk Reports 3Q Loss

Connecticut-based Eagle Bulk Shipping Inc reported a loss of $19.4 million in its third quarter ended September 30, 2016. It had net loss of $20.4 million last year Q3. It has a loss of 52 cents per share compared to  $10.83 net loss per share, for the comparable quarter in 2015. The shipping company posted revenue of $35.8 million in the period, versus $29.1 million reported last year. Fleet utilization rate of 98.9%. The sale of MV Harrier and MV Kittiwake for net proceeds of $3.2 million and $4.2 million, respectively. On November 7, 2016, Eagle Bulk announced the acquisition of a 2016 built 61,000 deadweight NACKS-61 Ultramax vessel constructed at Nantong COSCO Kawasaki Heavy Industries Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS) for $18.85 million.
