Houthis Target Vessel in the Red Sea, Yemeni Military Source Says

Yemen's Houthis targeted a fuel tanker, Mado, in the Red Sea with naval missile and Israel's Eilat port and resort region with winged missiles, the group's military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said on Tuesday.Mado is a Marshall-Islands flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker heading to Singapore from Saudi Arabia, maritime shipping trackers showed. The Houthis described it as American, but Equasis's shipping database indicates that it is owned by Naftomar Shipping & Trading Co Ltd of Greece.

Naftomar Shipping Orders Four Ammonia-powered VLGCs

Shipowner Naftomar Shipping announced an order for four very large ammonia carriers, to be built by South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean (formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering) for scheduled delivery from 2026. With a capacity of 93,000 m3, the ships are among the world’s largest ammonia carriers ordered to date.The Bureau Veritas (BV) classed ships will be fitted with a ME-LGIP LPG dual-fuel engine, ready to be converted to use ammonia as fuel when the MAN ES ammonia engine retrofit kit is made available.

Hanwha Ocean Lands $500M Deal to Build Four Very Large Ammonia Carriers

Hanwha Ocean has secured an order worth approximately $500 million to construct four very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) for Greek shipping company Naftomar Shipping and Trading Co. Ltd. Inc (Naftomar). Each VLAC will be able to transport 93,000 cubic meters (cbm) of ammonia, a carbon-free fuel, making them the largest vessel of their class in the world, Hanwha Ocean. The vessels will be built at Hanwha’s Geoje shipyard and delivered to the shipowner starting in 2026.The VLACs will be outfitted with Hanwha Ocean’s latest technologies…

Jiangnan Bags 2 VLGC Order from Naftomar

Naftomar Shipping And Trading Co. Ltd. Inc., which is engaged in shipping and trading liquid petroleum gas, contracted China’s Jiangnan Shipyard to build two Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC), say local media reports.   The Voula, Greece-based company has ordered one 84,000 cu m , with an option to construct one more. Other contract details, financial details of the deal and the delivery date of the ship  were not revealed.     According to Jiangnan Shipyard this is their first working relationship with Naftomar.    Jiangnan Shipyard is the leading VLGC yard in China, with a total of 11 VLGC currently on order. Jiangnan is a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

Olivier Named UK Club Chairman

Alan Olivier, the new Chairman and President of the UK P&I Club

Alan Olivier was elected Chairman and President of the UK P&I Club at their board meeting in Bermuda on October 28. He succeeds Dino Caroussis who has retired from the board. Mr. Olivier, 53, Chief Executive Officer of Grindrod Limited, became a Director of the UK Club in 2000 and a Deputy Chairman in 2006. Mr. Caroussis, 61, of Chios Navigation, had been the Club’s Chairman for the past five years, having joined the board in 1996 in the shipping division. He held senior treasury and financial positions before his appointment as chief executive of Unicorn Shipping in 1995.

P&I: UK Club Increases 2014 Renewal Rate 10%

The UK Club Board has decided on a general increase for 2014 renewal of 10 per cent. This across the board premium rating increase is in addition to any increase in the cost of the International Group reinsurance. Overall, the Club’s financial position remains strong with the free reserves and capital standing at US$473 million and total assets of US$1.6 billion as at 20 August 2013. Since these figures were recorded at the half year, the position has improved with investment income increasing from $6 million to $33 million.

Company Fined for Spilling in Port Angeles Harbor

The Department of Ecology (Ecology) has fined owners of the Gaz Diamond propane tanker $75,500 for spilling oil into the Port Angeles harbor in May 2002. The Gaz Diamond is owned by the Naftomar Shipping and Trading Company Ltd., based in Greece. The ship spilled 1,188 gallons of fuel oil when its tanks overfilled while refueling. The oil washed up on nearby beaches and docks along the southern shore of the Ediz Hook peninsula near the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station. Cleanup efforts lasted five days and involved oil skimming vessels, thousands of feet of oil containment boom and hundreds of oil snares staked along the shore. Oil collected in nearby commercial fish pens, on docks, log booms, private boats, the public boat launch, a U.S. Coast Guard vessel, and the Puget Sound Pilot Station.
