New 3D Geophysical Survey Vessel Named

On September 29, a delivery ceremony for a new 3D geophysical seismic survey vessel was held at the port of Tokyo and attended by NYK chairman Tadaki Naito.The new vessel, Tansa, will be operated by Ocean Geo-Frontier Co. Naming Ceremony for New LNG Carrier

On May 14, a naming ceremony was held at the Nagasaki shipyard of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier that NYK and JERA Co. will jointly own. The ceremony was attended by Satoshi Onoda, president of JERA Co. Inc.; Tadaaki Naito, president of NYK; and a number of related parties.At the ceremony, the ship was named “Bushu Maru” by Mr. Onoda, and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. NYK Takes Delivery of New Coal Carrier

Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has taken delivery of a coal carrier equipped with a binary cycle power-generation system that utilizes engine exhaust heat.The new coal carrier Pirika Mosiri Maru that NYK will own and operate to transport coal for Hokkaido Electric Power(HEPCO), was delivered yesterday (January 23) at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. New LNG Carrier for Tokyo Gas Named

A naming ceremony for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier was held Wednesday  at the Tsu shipyard of Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) in Tsu city, Japan.NYK and Tokyo LNG Tanker Co. Coal Carrier Enters Service for Okinawa Electric Power

A new coal carrier, Shinryo Maru, was delivered at Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. on March 9. The new coal carrier is the second ship to take the name Shinryo Maru. The first-generation vessel was delivered in 2003 and began transporting coal for OEPC 15 years ago. The new ship, which replaces the previous one, has been registered in Okinawa prefecture, Japan, the same as the first-generation vessel, and will transport coal mainly from Australia and Indonesia to generate electricity for OEPC. Compared to a standard 70,000-ton Panamax bulk carrier, the new Shinryo Maru has a wider beam and a shallower draft, improving transportation efficiency. The delivery ceremony was attended by Mitsuru Omine, president of Okinawa Electric Power Company Inc.

NYK Cautions of Illegal Conducts in Chinese Subsidiary

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) said that it has discovered that there is a possibility that former locally hired management personnel in NYK Car Carrier (China), its consolidated subsidiary located in Shanghai. NYK Line Focuses on Green and Digitalization

NYK president Tadaaki Naito called for promoting environmental issues and the utilization of IoT. "I hope to advance the group’s activities with a focus particularly on the keywords 'green' and 'digitalization' this year," he said. "We are already making progress in both fields, and pressing forward to promote their use in practical operations that will allow us to realize a wide range of ideas and further differentiate ourselves," Tadaaki added. ONE, the joint venture company for liner integration, will aim to commence services from April this year, and the difficult work of bringing the company to life is continuing. It is most important for the NYK Group to provide full support to these efforts.

NYK, DNV GL Present Vessel Data Results

At Nor-Shipping 2017, NYK and DNV GL presented the first results of an ongoing maritime data center pilot project. The data center collects operational data from NYK vessels on DNV GL’s recently launched Veracity industry data platform, for monitoring vessel performance and condition-based maintenance schemes. The collaboration between NYK and DNV GL, supported by engine manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo, started in November 2015. Over the past 18 months, four NYK container vessels have been uploading operational data to the platform.

NYK-TDG Maritime Academy Graduates Its Class of 2016

The NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA), which is located in the suburbs of Manila and jointly run by NYK and the Transnational Diversified Group (TDG), proudly graduated the 117 students comprising the academy’s Class of 2016. NYK president Tadaaki Naito and TDG chairman J. Roberto C. Delgado, in addition to invited guests that included Ciriaco Lagunzad III, administrator of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, participated in the graduation ceremony for the students, all of whom had enrolled in 2012. NYK Conduct Annual Safety Campaign

n August 24, NYK president Tadaaki Naito, NYK executive officers, and a group of six vessel captains and chief engineers held a meeting at NYK headquarters in Tokyo to openly exchange opinions about the safe operation of vessels that NYK is managing and operating. This meeting is part of NYK’s two-month Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign,* which is implemented annually from July 1 of each year. The meeting is chaired by President Naito, who oversees NYK’s Safety and Environmental Management Committee,** so that top management can exchange direct opinions with captains and chief engineers to develop further practical measures with respect to safe operation of our vessels.

NYK Celebrates Its 131st Anniversary

NYK president Tadaaki Naito marked the 131st anniversary of NYK’s founding by addressing company employees at the NYK head office in Tokyo on October 3. He encouraged employees to demonstrate courage and conviction for change in a new era. "NYK Group has been making progress up to the present day by applying the group’s creativity and ingenuity in pursuit of its own distinct path. While we, too, have our own strengths and weaknesses, we have also been highly attuned to the changing times and shifting needs of customers," he said. There are also formidable rivals in the shipping industry competing against the NYK Group. "We also must beat out new players from emerging countries, which are likely to rapidly grow more competitive in the future.

Offshore Brazil: Production Starts at FPSO Unit

In February, a second floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO)* unit deployed by NYK for the BM-S-11 consortium through a joint venture company started oil production in a pre-salt area off Brazil. This FPSO unit, FPSO Cidade de Marica, is owned by a shareholder consortium comprising SBM Offshore N.V. (Netherlands), Queiroz Galvão Óleo e Gás S.A. (Brazil), and a joint venture company between NYK (48.72 percent; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president: Tadaaki Naito) and the Mitsubishi Corporation (51.28 percent; head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; president & CEO: Ken Kobayashi). The joint venture has a 20-year time charter contract with Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) to operate the FSPO.

NYK Conducts Crisis-response Drill on VLCC

On October 15 as part of the company’s Remember Naka-no-Se Campaign,* NYK conducted a crisis-response drill based on the scenario of a serious accident occurring on an NYK-owned VLCC (very large crude-oil carrier). Cooperation from the Maritime Bureau within Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), in addition to the Japan Coast Guard and the Maritime Disaster Prevention Center, enabled this drill to be realistic and practical. During the drill, NYK’s crisis-management headquarters simulated a press conference and timely press releases, and reconfirmed the importance of immediate and correct information disclosure to the public. A summary of the drill is provided below. A blackout occurred on a VLCC while the ship was sailing in Tokyo Bay.

Demolition Begins on Boat Works Complex

Workers began to remove the ways building at the former Nichols Boat Works site, the Dalles Chronicle reported. Last week, planners approved a 42-unit townhouse development by Naito Development at that location. Naito bought the 5.5 acre parcel from Nichols Boat Works, Inc. in January, 2007. The building being removed was the third shop used by the boat works in its 57-year history (1940-1997). It was built in 1969 when the Port of Hood River was completing a massive dredge and fill project north of the freeway. As part of the attraction, the fill at the site was sloped properly at six percent for the ways, or skids, from which boats were launched.
