First Container Ship Call at Duke Point Terminal, Nanaimo

The arrival of the 'M/V Westwood Pacific' at the Nanaimo Port Authority’s Duke Point terminal marks the first such berthing at the Port’s facilities and will provide a direct link to Asia. Westwood Shipping Lines operate a dedicated break bulk and container service to Asia and have been evaluating the Vancouver Island market for some time. This trial call, with express service to Japan, Korea and feeder service to other Asian ports, is expected to lead to a regular service, providing Vancouver Island manufacturers the option to ship their goods from Nanaimo. Canada to Fund Short Sea Shipping Project

The Honorable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of the Honorable Ed Fast, Canada’s Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Alberni, and Mr. Robert Bennie, Chair of Nanaimo Port Authority, today announced funding for a short sea shipping project in British Columbia, further bolstering Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI). Under APGCI, Canada’s government is contributing up to $4.65 million to modernize the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf area and rehabilitate an aging dock that has not been active for over 10 years due to its condition. Short sea shipping is a multimodal concept.

Virginia Port Authority Executive Director Named Chairman; Two Past AAPA Board Directors Receive Distinguished Service Award. Virginia Port Authority Executive Director Jerry Bridges was formally installed on Sept. 15 as the American Association of Port Authorities' (AAPA) chairman of the board for 2011-12. Mr. Bridges accepted his new chairmanship duties at a membership meeting in Seattle during which the entire slate of 2011-12 officers was inducted as part of AAPA's 100th Annual Convention.

Nanaimo Port Authority Appoints Green to Board

Transport Minister David Collenette today announced the appointment of Martyn J. Green of Nanoose Bay, B.C., to the board of directors of the Nanaimo Port Authority. Mr. Green, who attended the London Polytechnic and London University, most recently served as president and general manager of Burrard Clean Operations, an industry oil spill response cooperative. He has conducted many oil spill response training sessions on a variety of subjects in Canada, the United States and in Vietnam. In 1972, he joined the British Columbia Petroleum Association, a petroleum industry trade organization, and created a spill response network. Prior to 1972, Mr. Green served as a senior marketing manager with a major international petroleum corporation.
