I predict that the first catastrophic maritime cyber incident will not be the result of a direct attack on a safety critical specific piece of equipment. ABS Drives Game-changing Tech through Research

University Partnership Symposium spotlights research that aims to contribute to sustainable solutions for industry. Classification society ABS has revealed technological advances at its recent University Partnership Symposium in Houston. ABS said the research it is funding through some of the top universities around the world will lead to disruptive technology that will impact the role of classification. Academic leaders from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Michigan, George Washington University and the State University of New York Maritime College presented at the ABS-hosted event, which engaged participants from academia and industry.

Fujifilm Debuts Silicone Fouling Release System

Fujifilm Smart Surfaces said its latest silicone fouling-release system solution will help save fuel and time during drydocking, helping tackle indigenous and invasive species that continue to propagate rapidly, infesting multiple waters and causing vast ecological and economic damage. The primary goals of the fouling release system are to prevent fouling from permanently attaching to surfaces, which increases drag and causes higher fuel usage and costs, and to reduce drydocking and maintenance, as well as reduce the generation of greenhouse gases. Nanotechnology & Big Data: New Review

A report commissioned by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, reviewing the potential implications of nanotechnology on the safety and performance of engineering assets and the infrastructure on which modern society relies on, finds that nanotechnology will have a far reaching impact on almost every industry including energy, transportation, manufacturing, medical, computing and telecommunications. Miniaturisation of sensor technology: Embedded nano-sensors in structural materials such as concrete, or ‘living’ inside engines, providing feedback on corrosion or stresses, will give continuous readout of real-time structural and systems performance data. This technology will also enhance robotics and un-manned vehicles across the transport sector (UAVs).

Seismic: The Motion Picture

Shell technology creates sharper pictures of underground rock formations to find new oil and gas fields more cost effectively. Shell has found a way to use tiny motion sensors – like those used in modern everyday gadgets – to create sharper pictures of underground rock formations. Geophysicists map underground rock structures by sending seismic waves – essentially sound – through the ground. Sensors record the seismic waves and computers process the recordings to create images of the rock layers. But these seismic images may not be sharp enough to pick up important details. As a result, multi-million dollar exploration wells sometimes end up as dry holes.

The Duke University Center on Globalization, Governance and Competitiveness (CGGC) recently completed a study on ocean technologies, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), for a consortium led by Nova Scotia’s Department of Economic and Rural Development and Tourism (ERDT). Excerpts from the report on the market and technology trends in ROVs and AUVs are provided in this article. Global ROV vehicle sales in 2010 totaled approximately $850 million.

ITF Signs Up Thailand’s PTTEP

ITF, the oil and gas industry technology facilitator announced a new membership agreement with Thailand’s national oil company, PTT Exploration & Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP). ITF plans to secure a $9 million investment from its members across the Asia-Pacific region to launch ground-breaking technologies. The organization will also bolster its team by creating a business development position, which will be based at its Kuala Lumpur office to further strengthen its presence across the region.

Navy's Top Engineers and Scientists Honored

By Lt. Cmdr. John T. The Acting Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition, John S. Thackrah, today honored 46 of the Department of the Navy's top scientists and engineers at the second annual Top Navy Scientists and Engineers of the Year award ceremony at the Pentagon, May 29. The Department of the Navy has over 35,000 scientists and engineers pursuing research, development, acquisition and sustainment. The award was established to honor those who reached superior technical achievements and to promote continued scientific and engineering excellence. "This award ceremony recognizes the top scientists and engineers in the Department of the Navy," Thackrah said.

Exxon Chief Backs More Access to Offshore Acreage

ExxonMobil Corp supports legislation that would give companies greater access to offshore U.S. oil and gas acreage, chief executive officer Rex Tillerson said. Two bills that would open up potential oil and gas reserves are being debated in the US Congress. A House of Representatives bill that would end a decades-old moratorium on drilling in federal waters is better than a Senate proposal, which opens tracts only in one section of the Gulf of Mexico, Tillerson said. Tillerson spoke at an Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries seminar in Vienna on the importance of technology in meeting world energy demand.
