New Wave Data Underpins Ship Structural Integrity

The loss of the Stellar Daisy in 2017 was a tragic reminder of the importance of wave data to ship design and operation. The vessel sank in the South Atlantic Ocean, with 22 of 24 crewmembers lost. The structural failure of the vessel was attributed to several factors including material fatigue and the forces imposed on the hull as a result of the weather conditions.Survey requirements for some vessel types have since been tightened, but even before this tragedy, work was underway to evaluate the wave data used to determine ship structural integrity requirements.

Families of Sunken Livestock Carrier Crew Plead for Search to Resume

Families of 39 Filipino crewmen who were aboard a cattle ship that sank during a typhoon are pleading for a search to continue and to expand into uninhabited islands and nearby waters, two weeks after their vessel capsized off Japan.In tears during an online news conference, family members urged authorities to resume a massive search effort, after Japan's coastguard suspended its rescue last week.Of the ship's 43 crew, three were rescuedā€”all Filipinosā€”but one later died after being found unconscious. Thirty-six Filipinos, two New Zealanders and two Australians are missing."We are getting frustrated not knowing where they are," said Liberty Seneres, wife of chief engineer, Aristotle Sabillena."We are worried.

New Zealand to Review Livestock Shipping After Capsizing

New Zealand on Friday launched a review of its livestock exports by sea, after a ship that left its shores with nearly 6,000 cows and 43 crew members capsized off Japan last week.Gulf Livestock 1, which left Napier Port last month bound for China sank after Typhoon Maysak lashed the area with strong winds and heavy seas.Japan's coastguards have suspended search operations, after two crewmen were rescued while another died after being found unconscious.

Rescued Crewman Dies, Records Reveal Defects with Cattle Ship Sunk off Japan

A crewman from a cattle ship that capsized enroute from New Zealand to China has died after being pulled unconscious from water by the Japanese coastguard on Friday, while it emerged the vessel had a history of mechanical issues.The unidentified man was only the second crewman to be found. The search is still on for the remaining 41 crew members after the ship carrying 6,000 cattle capsized in the East China Sea on Wednesday.Rescuers also found a life jacket and cattle carcasses in the area where the Gulf Livestock 1 is believed to have sunk after it sent a distress call amid strong winds and heavy seas whipped up by Typhoon Maysak.Gulf Livestock 1ā€¦

Livestock Carrier Capsized in Storm off Japan, Rescued Crewman says

A ship carrying 43 crew and nearly 6,000 cattle from New Zealand to China capsized after losing an engine in stormy weather in the East China Sea, the only crew member rescued so far told Japan's coastguard on Thursday.The Gulf Livestock 1 sent a distress call from the west of Amami Oshima island in southwestern Japan on Wednesday as Typhoon Maysak lashed the area with strong winds and heavy seas.Japan's coastguard said it had rescued one crew member, Sareno Edvarodo, a 45-year-old chief officer from the Philippines, on Wednesday night (Tokyo time) while searching for the ship.According to Edvarodo, the ship lost an engine before it was hit by a wave and capsized, a coastguard spokeswoman said.When the ship capsized, crew were instructed to put on lifejackets.

Port Napie Orders Damen Tug

Napier Port, the third largest port on New Zealandā€™s North Island, has placed an order with Damen Shipyards Group for an Azimuth Tractor Drive (ATD) Tug 2412 Twin Fin for delivery later this year.The contract was signed by Sjoerd de Bruin, sales manager Pacific for Damen and Napier Port CEO Todd Dawson at Napier Port main office.Napier Port is currently developing a sixth wharf which, at 350 meters long, will be capable of handling the larger vessels that are expected to access the port in the near future.

Napier Port Lists on NZX

New Zealand's Napier Port successfully completed its $234 million initial public offer (IPO) with a listing ceremony at the Portā€™s Breakwater Road site in Napier.After ringing the bell to welcome in trading of the Portā€™s shares on New Zealand Exchange (NZX) under the ticker ā€˜NPHā€™ on August 20, Chairman Alasdair MacLeod said the success of the IPO would allow investment in the infrastructure necessary for the Port to extend its 150-year record of supporting economic growth in the region.ā€œToday is the culmination of a 5-year journey that has seen the Port, Hawkeā€™s Bay Regional Council and the broader community working in close partnership towards a shared goal,ā€  MacLeod said.ā€œThanks to the IPO, Napier Port can continue to invest in improving capacity.

DSV Rever Polaris Gets Engine Overhaul

New engineering work involving the overhaul of diesel engines on the offshore construction and dive support vessel (DSV) Rever Polaris, has been completed by power specialist Royston.Engineers undertook the DG1 and DG3 24,000 and DG4 36,000 running hours service on the generator engines on board the 113-meter-long vessel at A&P Tyneā€™s facilities in the North East of England, as part of a comprehensive refurbishment and maintenance program of critical power units.The 1999-built Polaris is part of Rever Offshoreā€™s fleet consisting of specialist offshore support vessels (OSV)ā€¦

One of the world's most advanced diving support vessels has undergone a comprehensive power plant refurbishment and maintenance program.Engineers undertook the 30,000 running hour major service on the generator engines on board the 140-meter-long Subsea 7 Seven Atlantic, said power specialist Royston who completed the diesel engines overhaul.The work by Royston saw the Wartsila W7L32 diesel generator No.5 disassembled to install new cylinder heads, air start valves, indicator cocks, injectors and cylinder seals.

Coast Guard Interdicts 25 Migrants Off Puerto Rico

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Napier (WPC-1115) repatriated 22 of 25 Dominican migrants to a Dominican Republic Navy vessel Monday, following the interdiction of a makeshift boat Saturday, approximately 20 nautical miles northwest of Mona Island, Puerto Rico.Three of the interdicted migrants are facing possible federal prosecution by the U.S. Attorneyā€™s Office for the District of Puerto Rico for illegally attempting to reenter the United States.The Coast Guard, and federal and Commonwealth of Puerto Rico law enforcement partners have interdicted more than 400 migrants and stopped several narcotics smuggling attempts since October of 2018."The migrants were attempting to make the transit across an ocean passage in a vessel that was inherently unsafe due to overloadingā€¦

NZ Harbour Welcomes its Largest Container Ship

The largest Port in the South Island of New Zealand, Lyttelton Port, has welcomed its largest ever container ship.The Singaporeā€“flagged Rio de Janeiro, which can carry nearly 6000 containers and is the length of about three rugby fields, arrived early Saturday.Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) Chief Executive, Peter Davie said, ā€œThe Rio de Janeiro is a new class of ship to call at Lyttelton. She can carry 5,905 twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEUs), while the largest container vessels currently visiting Lyttelton commonly carry 4,500 to 5,000 TEUs.ā€œThis is an important milestone for Lyttelton Port and our customers. Royston Expands UK Engineering Facilities

Royston Diesel Power has doubled the size of its UK engineering facilities to support continuing global growth in its marine engine service business and new technology development. As part of a £500,000 ($676,000) investment program the company has opened an additional 15,000 sq. ft. of engineering workshop premises alongside its existing headquarters on the banks of the River Tyne. As well as increasing the companyā€™s engine repair and maintenance capability, the new center will also provide a focus for a range of other technical support functions.

CMA CGM, SEATRADE Launch Joint Reefer Service

Container shipping firm CMA CGM Group and reefer transport specialist SEATRADE Group will together create a new vessel sharing agreement incorporating the services known by CMA CGM as PAD and by Seatrade as MERIDIAN, linking Northern Europe, the East Coast of the U.S., Central America, the Pacific Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Peru and the Caribbean on a weekly basis. The new service, expected to launch in October 2017, will bring together CMA CGM, SEATRADE and shipping company MARFRET and improve their frequency and port coverage.

Bollinger Delivers USCGC Benjamin Dailey

Bollinger Shipyards said it has delivered the USCGC Benjamin Dailey, the 23rd Fast Response Cutter (FRC) to the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard took delivery of the 154-foot patrol craft on April 20, 2017 in Key West, Fla. The vesselā€™s commissioning is scheduled for July 4, 2017 in Pascagoula, Miss. The 23rd vessel in the Coast Guard's Sentinel-class FRC program, USCGC Benjamin Dailey will be the first FRC to be stationed in the 8th Coast Guard District in Pascagoula, Miss. Previous cutters have been stationed in Florida; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Cape May, N.J. and Ketchikan, Alaska.
