Families of Sunken Livestock Carrier Crew Plead for Search to Resume

Families of 39 Filipino crewmen who were aboard a cattle ship that sank during a typhoon are pleading for a search to continue and to expand into uninhabited islands and nearby waters, two weeks after their vessel capsized off Japan.In tears during an online news conference, family members urged authorities to resume a massive search effort, after Japan's coastguard suspended its rescue last week.Of the ship's 43 crew, three were rescued—all Filipinos—but one later died after being found unconscious. Thirty-six Filipinos, two New Zealanders and two Australians are missing."We are getting frustrated not knowing where they are," said Liberty Seneres, wife of chief engineer, Aristotle Sabillena."We are worried.

New Zealand to Review Livestock Shipping After Capsizing

New Zealand on Friday launched a review of its livestock exports by sea, after a ship that left its shores with nearly 6,000 cows and 43 crew members capsized off Japan last week.Gulf Livestock 1, which left Napier Port last month bound for China sank after Typhoon Maysak lashed the area with strong winds and heavy seas.Japan's coastguards have suspended search operations, after two crewmen were rescued while another died after being found unconscious.

Rescued Crewman Dies, Records Reveal Defects with Cattle Ship Sunk off Japan

A crewman from a cattle ship that capsized enroute from New Zealand to China has died after being pulled unconscious from water by the Japanese coastguard on Friday, while it emerged the vessel had a history of mechanical issues.The unidentified man was only the second crewman to be found. The search is still on for the remaining 41 crew members after the ship carrying 6,000 cattle capsized in the East China Sea on Wednesday.Rescuers also found a life jacket and cattle carcasses in the area where the Gulf Livestock 1 is believed to have sunk after it sent a distress call amid strong winds and heavy seas whipped up by Typhoon Maysak.Gulf Livestock 1

Port Napie Orders Damen Tug

Napier Port, the third largest port on New Zealand’s North Island, has placed an order with Damen Shipyards Group for an Azimuth Tractor Drive (ATD) Tug 2412 Twin Fin for delivery later this year.The contract was signed by Sjoerd de Bruin, sales manager Pacific for Damen and Napier Port CEO Todd Dawson at Napier Port main office.Napier Port is currently developing a sixth wharf which, at 350 meters long, will be capable of handling the larger vessels that are expected to access the port in the near future.

Napier Port Lists on NZX

New Zealand's Napier Port successfully completed its $234 million initial public offer (IPO) with a listing ceremony at the Port’s Breakwater Road site in Napier.After ringing the bell to welcome in trading of the Port’s shares on New Zealand Exchange (NZX) under the ticker ‘NPH’ on August 20, Chairman Alasdair MacLeod said the success of the IPO would allow investment in the infrastructure necessary for the Port to extend its 150-year record of supporting economic growth in the region.“Today is the culmination of a 5-year journey that has seen the Port, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and the broader community working in close partnership towards a shared goal,”  MacLeod said.“Thanks to the IPO, Napier Port can continue to invest in improving capacity.

Four TEREX Mobile Cranes for Asia Pacific

Terex Port Solutions (TPS) continues to systematically strengthen its position in the Asia Pacific region with four new mobile harbour cranes. Two additional Terex Gottwald Model 6 mobile harbour cranes from the large crane family, ordered earlier this year, have been in use in the Port of Napier on New Zealand’s North Island since November. On 4 December, Northport Ltd. (Northport) not only officially launched its container hardstand area, but also a Terex Gottwald Model 4 mobile harbour crane from the medium-sized crane family at Marsden Point, also situated on the North Island. Auckland Port Led JV to Develop Inland Port

Ports of Auckland, Napier Port and Icepak today announced the formation of a joint-venture to develop a new inland port and intermodal freight hub at Longburn, Palmerston North and to target Growth in Manawatu-Whanganui Region. Located on the site of the old Longburn freezing works owned by Icepak, the venture will see the nine hectare site transformed into a significant intermodal logistics and manufacturing hub. Site clearance is underway and work will start soon on a cross dock to complement the existing Icepak cold store on site. A container yard and container wash facility – to prepare containers to export ready standard – will also be built. This is the first stage of a $20 million development.

Hapag-Lloyd is Restructuring Service

Starting end of April, Hapag-Lloyd will operate their own independent service from Northern Europe via Suez direct to Australia/New Zealand that it used to provide with a partner. “We will be introducing two additional units and continuing to operate the service with twelve ships. With this direct service, we offer the best transit times on this route,” states Anthony Firmin, Managing Director Ship and Container Management of Hapag-Lloyd AG. Vessels with a capacity of 2,500 TEU, including 300 reefer plugs, are deployed for the weekly service provided on fixed weekdays. The transit time from Rotterdam to Melbourne is only 28 days. Carriers Confirm Plans

Six container shipping lines in the Europe-Australasia-North America trade have finalized plans to introduce a new and improved liner service system for their existing operations on the world's longest trade-route. The new system will see five existing services replaced by two fixed-day weekly contra-rotating round-the-world operations. Marfret and P&ONedlloyd.
