The large 203,130 dwt bulk carrier Wakashio has run hard aground in an environmentally sensitive area off the east coast of Mauritius, on Saturday evening.The 300-meter, Panamanian-flagged vessel was sailing under ballast without cargo through a major shipping lane in the Indian Ocean when it went off course and grounded on the reefs of Pointe d'Esny, while en route from China to Brazil. The Government of Mauritius has organized an event at Port Louis to mark the successful completion of hydrographic survey by Indian Navy ship INS Darshak over the past one month.The aim of the survey was to publish navigational charts and electronic navigational charts of the region as part of the ongoing cooperation between the two nations.The function was attended by senior functionaries of the Government of Mauritius.Commanding Officer, INS Darshak Capt J Gurumani and Tanmay Lal, the High Commissioner of India to Republic of Mauritius handed over the preliminary hydrographic fair sheet of Souillac in southern Mauritius and Deep Sea Block of South-East of Mauritius to the Minister Louis Steven Obeegadoo…

In keeping with India’s national objective of ensuring a secure and stable regional environment to allow unhindered economic and social development, not just in India, but also in the Indian Ocean Region, Indian Naval Ship Shardul is on a two month long deployment in the South Indian Ocean with an aim to provide surveillance support in the region. The warship during the initial phase of deployment carried out joint EEZ surveillance of Mauritius from 08 – 26 March 2017 in close coordination with National Coast Guard, Mauritius. Post successful completion of joint EEZ Surveillance of Mauritius, the warship entered EEZ of Seychelles on 27 March 2017 for Phase I of EEZ surveillance. The warship under the command of Commander Rohit Mishra entered Port Victoria on 28 March 2017 for OTR.

The National Coast Guard Museum Association, Inc. presented the 2016 Alexander Hamilton Award to Coast Guard veteran and founder of J.D. Power and Associates, Inc., J. David Power III, who served as an officer aboard the Coast Guard icebreaker EASTWIND during the mid-1950s. Power was honored in recognition of his years of outstanding service in support of the National Coast Guard Museum. Powers has spent almost 50 years as a pioneer in studying consumer opinions, with 40 years as founder of what has become one of the most prestigious marketing information companies in the world, J.D.

Indian Naval ships Kolkata and Aditya, under the Command of the Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, are in Mauritius since 1st September 2016, in a demonstration of India's commitment to its ties with Mauritius and to promote maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. INS Kolkata is commanded by Captain Rahul Vilas Gokhale and INS Aditya is commanded by Captain Vidyanshu Srivastava. The ships are part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet based at Mumbai under the Western Naval Command and are on a two month long deployment in the Western Indian Ocean. Mauritius is an island nation in the southwestern Indian Ocean. The country has just 2,040 square kilometers of land on several islands but a huge exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of 2.3 million square kilometers. The major challenge of patrolling this vast area of the Indian Ocean became somewhat more manageable with the delivery of the final five of ten Fast Interceptor Boats designed and built by the Government of India owned Shipyard M/s Goa Shipyard Ltd. The Mauritius National Coast Guard will use the boats to enhance their abilities to provide effective surveillance for fisheries and customs, as well as search and rescue. The aluminum boats are 14.3-meters long with a beam of four meters and a molded depth of .9 meters.

Indian Navy's stealth frigate INS Teg is on a two-month long deployment in the South Indian Ocean to provide surveillance support in the region, a Government of India Ministry of Defence official statement said. It will also be patrolling the Mauritian exclusive economic zone. This is in keeping with India's national objective of ensuring a secure and stable regional environment to allow unhindered economic and social development, not just in India, but also in the entire Indian Ocean Region. Eastern Shipbuilding has donated $250,000 for the construction of the National Coast Guard Museum in New London, Connecticut, the National Coast Guard Museum Association announced yesterday. Eastern Shipbuilding, a diversified ship builder headquartered in Panama City, Florida, made the donation to the National Coast Guard Museum Association, which is currently engaged in a nationwide fundraising campaign to build a museum to honor the men and women of the U.S. Coast guard. The Coast Guard is currently the only branch of the U.S. military without a dedicated museum.

Daniel Malloy and Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Bob Papp dip their shovels into the soil, signifying the beginning of what will be a tremendous physical transformation to the New London waterfront area, where the future National Coast Guard Museum will be built (See photograph).

Adm. Bob Papp was present as City of New London, Conn., and the National Coast Guard Museum Association unveiled the plans and location of the museum. As the oldest U.S. maritime service, and the only U.S. military service without a national museum, the National Coast Guard Museum will afford the public an opportunity to learn about the rich and noteworthy achievements of the men and women who forged the service’s history of the past 223 years. The U.S. Coast Guard formally accepted and introduced its new Rescue 21 advanced communications system at Group Humboldt Bay on Feb. 16. This new capability, which will eventually be introduced nationwide, increases the ability of Coast Guard men and women to execute all of their missions, especially their search and rescue mission, with greater agility and efficiency. The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced that, at a joint meeting of the Executive Committees of the National Coast Guard Museum Association and the Coast Guard Foundation, it was voted to postpone work on developing a National Coast Guard Museum. The project was launched last year to honor the efforts of our guardians of the shores, and celebrate the over one million individuals saved by the Coast Guard—the only branch of the military that does not have a museum. “The reality of today’s economic climate makes a project which is so dependant on private philanthropy very difficult at this time,” said Ross Roeder, chairman of the board, Coast Guard Foundation.

An accomplished museum administrator with over 25 years experience, Mr. Ostermiller will establish museum programming, develop internal infrastructure and lead capital campaign fund raising efforts for the construction of the country's newest national museum in New London, Connecticut. A new installation of Transas VTS system took place in the middle of August at Heimaey, the main populated island in Vestmanneyjar archipelago southwest of the Icelandic mainland. The history of this project goes back several years, when the Icelandic Telecommunication Company were interested in acquiring a system intended to supervise/protect national submarine communications. A huge submarine cable integrated with the transatlantic submarine communication line between Europe and Northern America connects Iceland with the rest of the Globe. This cable has been damaged several times because of incorrect fishing and anchoring operations, consequently causing very expensive repair works often running into millions of US dollars.

The Coast Guard will honor an internationally known historian with one of the highest honors the military service can award members of the public at a Coast Guard unit in Philadelphia on September 17 at 10:30 a.m. William D. Wilkinson, director emeritus of the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, Va., and the founding director of the international Association for Rescue at Sea, will receive the Meritorious Public Service Award at Coast Guard Marine Safety Office/Group Philadelphia. The award will be presented by Rear Adm. Kevin Eldridge, Assistant Commandant for Governmental and Public Affairs, on behalf of the Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, Adm. Thomas Collins. Wilkinson is being recognized for his decades of work supporting the Coast Guard’s history program.

Bremen-based STN Atlas Elektronik has been awarded a major contract to supply the Kuwaiti National Coast Guard with a new purpose-designed radar-based coastal surveillance system due to begin service in 2005. The system will comprise a series of nine Atlas 9760 VTS high-resolution radar stations providing loss-free digitized raw video for operator detection of all sizes of targets, particularly very small ones. Additionally, some stations will also include radio direction finders and meteorological sensors as well as specially-designed AIS facilities to meet specific Coast Guard requirements. All the stations will be connected via high-availability microwave links to two VTS sub-centers.

A $7.1 billion authorization for the U.S. Coast Guard’s fiscal year 2004 activities was unanimously approved by the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on June 25. The measure approved was a manager's amendment of the bill as introduced. It authorizes the agency to expend $7.1 billion during FY 2004. Monies are specifically authorized for review and approval of vessel and facility security plans. Non-tank vessels over 400 gross tons will be required to have oil spill response plans, similar to those required of tank vessels. The liability provisions of OPA 90 are conformed to those found in the Superfund legislation. The measure now goes to the full House for consideration.
