The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has reduced maintenance costs by minimizing the time spent on ship bottom refurbishing, with the help of E Paint Company of East Falmouth, Mass. E Paint SN-1 coating provides USCG vessels with well-balanced control over a wide array of common soft and hard fouling species. Vessels coated with E Paint SN-1 solventborne antifouling paint can operate for up to two years before they must be hauled, pressure-washed and repainted. This is longer than is possible with virtually all approved non-metallic biocide antifouling paint. Extending the interval between maintenance significantly reduces vessel downtime.

Raytheon Company's Intelligence and Information Systems business has been awarded a six-month, competitive contract by the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Ocean Service to develop a conceptual design, life-cycle cost estimate and viability narrative for the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS). IOOS is a significant component of the emerging Global Earth Observation System of Systems, a global monitoring network involving NOAA, federal partners, and nearly 60 countries. Raytheon will perform the work at its Aurora, Colo., Pasadena, Calif., and Reston, Va., sites.

VT Halter Marine, Inc., a subsidiary of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc. (VT Systems) has finalized an agreement with the U.S. Government to complete two contracts, including the construction of a Fisheries Research Vessel for the National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the construction of a Logistic Support Vessel for the U.S. Army. The Agreement, known as a “novation” provides an arrangement for VT Halter Marine to complete the multi-million dollar construction projects started by its predecessor. It was approved after the U.S. Government conducted an in-depth review to assure it was in their best interest to transfer the contracts to VT Halter Marine.
