AWEA Chicago Conference & Expo Kicks Off

New  American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) leadership takes helm with EDPR’s Gabriel Alonso chairing the board. Tom Kiernan to speak as incoming CEO. Generating a sense of electricity like the thousands of wind turbines in the region, the WINDPOWER 2013 Conference & Exhibition (May 5-8, 2013) officially came online in Chicago, a hub for the American wind energy industry. New leadership for the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is first being inducted, followed by a packed schedule of educational sessions and a dynamic exhibition covering the area of 11 football fields. WINDPOWER 2013 also marks the start of a new industry year, with Gabriel Alonso, CEO of EDP Renewables North America, beginning his one-year term as Board Chair.

Oil Spill & Offshore Drilling Commission Members

The bipartisan Commission, established through an Executive Order, is tasked with providing recommendations on how we can prevent – and mitigate the impact of – any future spills that result from offshore drilling. The Council is co-chaired by former two-term Florida Governor and former U.S. Senator Bob Graham and former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency William K. Reilly. Frances G. Frances Beinecke is currently the President of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a non-profit corporation that works to advance environmental policy in the United States and across the world. Ms. Beinecke has worked at NRDC for 35 years, serving as executive director, associate director and deputy executive director.

Judge Cuts Alaskan Cruises

A federal judge has ordered the National Park Service to reduce cruise-ship sailings immediately in Glacier Bay National Park, one of Alaska's top tourist destinations. The ruling will affect thousands of tourists who have booked cruise trips through Alaska's glacier-filled Inside Passage. Glacier Bay, about 60 miles (100 km) west of the capital, Juneau, at the north of the Inside Passage, is considered a highlight of those trips. U.S. District Court Judge James Singleton announced his decision at the end of a hearing on Friday, August 3, and formalized it with a written ruling on Monday, August 6. The decision followed a ruling in February by the 9th U.S.
