Viega, the first press fitting system to meet the standard for use on Navy combat ships, has won approval for additional components to be used onboard. Last year, the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) approved the use of MegaPress® CuNi press fittings in sizes ½" to 2" to be used in surface combatant vessels for a variety of systems, including chilled water, potable water, electronic freshwater cooling, seawater cooling, washdown countermeasures, drainage and many others. ProPress copper ½" fittings were also approved for potable water and various drains.

US Department of Defense informs of placement of contracts for Chesapeake Bay dredging, dry-docking of USS Pearl Harbor, and charter of surface escort vessels. Norfolk Dredging Company, Chesapeake, Virginia, has been awarded $18,784,248 for a dredging requirement for Baltimore harbor and channels. Maintenance dredging will take place in various channel sections in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. Fiscal 2014 operations and maintenance (Army) funds in the amount of $18,784,248 were obligated at the time of the award. In February, the U.S. Coast Guard chose three finalists to design its new Offshore Patrol Cutters, with awards to Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, La., Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, Fla. and General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works in Maine. Weeks Marine has been awarded a substantial dredging contract, and NASSCO a contract for the phased maintenance of  'USS Peleliu'. Weeks Marine Inc., Covington, La., was awarded an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, firm-fixed-price contract with a maximum value of $12,728,225 for dredging services in support of various projects. Work will be performed in West Baton Rouge Parish, La.; West Feliciana Parish, La.; St. Martin Parish, La.; and St. Mary Parish, La. The type of appropriation will be determined with each order. The Navy's first Mobile Landing Platform, 'USNS Montford Point' (MLP 1), successfully completes builder's sea trials in San Diego. USNS Montford Point was constructed by General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO) and these builder's trials test the vessel's propulsion, ballasting, communications, navigation and mission systems, as well as related support systems. MLP is based on an existing commercial design, the Alaska-class crude oil carrier, ensuring design stability and lower development costs.

The new contract is a modification to previously awarded cost-plus award fee/incentive fee contract (N00024-07-C-4013) for the USS Essex (LHD 2) fiscal 2012 dry-dock phased maintenance availability. San Diego, Calif., is being awarded a $578,206,817 fixed-price-incentive modification under previously awarded contract (N00024-02-C-2300) to exercise options for design and construction of the fifth and sixth ships in the Dry Cargo/Ammunition Ship (T-AKE) Class. This modification will provide for full funding of the detailed design and construction of the fifth and sixth ships of the T-AKE 1 Class. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by July 2007. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. BP has placed an order for a fourth double-hull oil tanker for use in delivering Alaska North Slope crude oil to refineries on the west coast. BP placed orders for three tankers in September 2000. Construction of the 1.3-million-barrel-capacity tankers will begin in early 2002. National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. (NASSCO) of San Diego is scheduled to deliver the first ship in late 2003 with subsequent ships being delivered in 2004, 2005 and 2006. BP will complete conversion of its Alaska fleet to double hulls in 2006. The four-ship order, with options for two additional tankers, has been matched to BP?s Alaskan production plans for the next decade.

National Steel and Shipbuilding Co., San Diego, Calif., is being awarded an $8,099,383 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-06-C-4402) for the repair and alteration for the Non-Docking Scheduled Availability of the USS Pearl Harbor (LSD-52). The contractor will furnish the material, support (electrical, crane, and rigging), and facilities necessary for the maintenance and modernization of the LSD/LPD class ships. This availability includes inspection and preservation of the Potable Water Tank, repair of the Ballast Tanks, and the 5-year strength and integrity inspection of the Auxiliary Boiler No. 2. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by Apr. 2009.
